Question about Cars & Trucks
I think you are referring to the IAC valve (Idle Air Control). If you wanted to know what it was called, I hope that helps. If not please write back and I'll try again. Please be specific and detailed, thank you.

either a vacuum leak or an idle air control valve problem most likely.the iac is on the side of the throttle body.cylinder shaped with a small harness.

When you say it's destroying the air filter---do you mean it's all sooted up ?? I am assuming that what you mean.
Try disconnecting the vacuum line at the egr valve and see if that helps.
But it sounds more like a plugged up exhaust system.Try disconnecting or looosing the flange before the cataylic convertor and then see how it runs.

The IAC (idle air control) may be stuck from dirt or malfunctioning. It's located in the intake near the throttle body.Remove it clean with carb cleaner and reinstall

Testimonial: "Thank you for response. Actually had IAC off and was clean inside. Resistance within range 9 ohms but voltage signal at 12.5 V rather than 10.5 V"
