Question about 1990 Ford F150

1 Answer

Wont pass emissions because of low pressure in the number 8 cylinder

I think I have a stuck valve on my 5.0 ford f-150 as it has 35lbs of pressure on the number 8 cyclinder so it wont pass emissions

I haven't got the truck back from the shop that looked at it yet. They said they advanced and retarded the timing and put a vacumn? on the engine to make it pass the emissions but it didn't. Then they said they did a compression test on it and the number 8 cyclinder had 35 lbs on it and all the others had 150?

    Thanks

    Steve

Have tried everything on the market for cleaning and still have 0 compression on the number 8 cylinder and 150 lbs on all the rest. Looks like a 1,000.00 valve job for my 700.00 truck.

  • dreamseason4 Jun 28, 2009

Tried everything still 0 compression. Burnt valve? I only paid 700.00 for the truck and now I guess 1400.00 for valve job????

  • dreamseason4 Jun 28, 2009

If I take the heads off myself, do I have to worry about any timing conditions???? I did a rebuild years ago (20) but cant remember and it was a 6 cylinder.

  • dreamseason4 Jul 18, 2009

Well I bought a replacement engine for 700.00 with 60,000 miles on it with a 3 year warranty and am having it swapped out. Oh well, I bought the truck for 700.00 and knew I had to put some money in it.
Thanks for all your help. I learned alot.

Go to Chrysler dealer or automotive store & get a can of "Combustion Chamber Cleaner" in spray can. I always used Chrysler brand because I've had real good results with it. Follow direction on can, but I normally let it sit all night if time allows, after shutting it down, then start in morning & rev as decscribed. I'd have a new set of spark plugs ready to install after the first revving of engine. Had one bad enough, I think the carbon coming off valves, broke porcelain off 2 plugs and the engine had a pretty good miss in it until I replaced them. If in doubt get back to me and I'll guide you through the process. I take it a wet/dry compression tests were done to confirm valve problem & not rings?

I was in charge of maintaining a fleet of 8 or so F-150's, and one in particular was a 1990 with 5.0L & overdrive transmission, driven by a guy who wouldn't go over the speed limit, if it was an emergency. That truck was constantly getting a misfire from carbon on the plugs & valves. With that overdrive & his driving habits, it just never got revved out enough to clean itself out. I remember numerous times, sending it to dealer for new plug(s) and combustion chamber cleaner put through it, and all would be smooth again for a while. When it was getting bad, it would bang in & out of overdrive on highway too. See what their recommendations are, but paying for a valve job when a $10 can of cleaner will probably do it, sounds like a good idea to me. If it doesn't work, your out $10.

Before you spend all that money, make sure you pull the rocker cover & observe that cylinders rocker arm, pushrod etc., compared to others, for any thing out of the ordinary.

Both rocker arms are moving as they should at that cylinder? I take it your having someone do both heads for $1400?

If it's only the one cylinder & you want to keep the bill down, just remove intake, which will require removing distributor I believe, but mark cap & rotor location for re-install, then disconnect battery & don't turn engine over for any reason, before it's back together. Once intake is off, just do what's necessary to remove the one head & have that valve repaired/replaced. Do yourself a favor, and before you get too carried away with pulling that head, get or borrow a fitting that will allow you to pump compressed air into that cylinder, and do so, after you remove the rocker arms to the valves in that cylinder, just to confirm bad valve. You should hear air blowing by in cylinder if valve is bad, either up through intake, or out through exhaust, just to confirm it is valve, before you rip it down.

PO300 code. 3.4L 98 Chevy blazer. (random misfire). this happens at high speeds 16000 rpms and higher. after the engine is warm it is more noticeable and misses at idling speeds. if i take it higher than...

A P0300 diagnostic code indicates a random or multiple misfire. If the last digit is a number other than zero, it corresponds to the cylinder number that is misfiring. A P0302 code, for example, would tell you cylinder number two is misfiring. Unfortunately, a P0300 doesn't tell you specifically which cylinder(s) is/are mis-firing, nor why. it could be any of the following A code P0300 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
  • Faulty spark plugs or wires
  • Faulty coil (pack)
  • Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
  • Faulty fuel injector(s)
  • Burned exhaust valve
  • Faulty catalytic converter(s)
  • Stuck/blocked EGR valve / passages
  • Faulty camshaft position sensor
  • Defective computer
  • also
  • Random misfires that jump around from one cylinder to another (read: P030x codes) also will set a P0300 code. The underlying cause is often a lean fuel condition, which may be due to a vacuum leak in the intake manifold or unmetered air getting past the airflow sensor, or an EGR valve that is stuck open.

1989 f150 302 V8 fuel injected emissions problem. Installed new engine from Ford, blew SKY HIGH on low and high idle emissions. Emission numbers were 10-20x max legal limit (over 3000). Replaced the...

the O2 sensor works on one volt .5 is around the running voltage, i would refit the air hose as it will run the converter hotter at idle.

I have a ford explorer 99 but it's giving a error code PO306 what do u think it is

It sounds like a misfire. Check spark plugs 5 and 6. It could be bad fuel, bad plug wire, or weak coil. Check the fuel injectors as well. Other possible causes could be an egr valve stuck open, vacuum leaks, low fuel pressure.

Try looking into HHO generators. Sounds crazy ,I know, but just check them out on YOUTUBE and you'll be amazed at what they'll do for emissions, and if you're handy enough you could build one yourself.
