If it's a serpentine belt, it could be routed wrong.

Which belt is it? Generally the belts will be in a groove in the pulley to keep from slipping, If this is the case, and your belt is slipping off, then you probably need to replace the pulley its slipping off of.

Bent or misaligned pulley, wrong belt, improper tension, are usual culprits. If tensioner is original, I'd look real close at that.

How do i remove the intake fuel hose from the fuel rail? i have a 98 ford escort lx

The line slips over a nipple. Inside the line there is a round spring that surrounds the ridge on the nipple to keep the line from coming off. They make a special release tool that can be bought at a part store that slides into the gap of the line and pushes that spring away from the ridge. Once inserted, you pull the line off.

My 98 ford escort ZX2 is getting gas, spark and air and still it wont start. what do i need to do to fix this

If gas and spark are OK, then the cam timing is probably off. Check the alignment of the timing belt: these can slip. If this is OK, pull the plugs and do a compression test.

I don't know if the ZX2 has an interference engine, but if it does, and the belt has slipped, you've likely bent some valves, which will show up as low or zero compression.

Fixing bent valves requires the head to removed and reconditioned.

I need to replace the drive belt on my 98 Ford Escort ZX2 manual transmission and need a diagram and to know where the tensioner is located. It is a single belt.

There are 3 possbile diagrams, depending on whether it's equipped with AC and engine type. The 3 are listed below. Thank you for using Fixya and please remember to return to rate this answer.

Timing belt cracked Engine in 98 Ford Escort

You can go to a shop that do this kind of work and find out.
Mine broke the timing belt and damage the head. I had a used head put on
It is not very hard to find a ford escort engine.Replacing the engine with a used one would be the cheapest thing to do but change the timing belt right away,
You can do some research on line to find out how much a engine cost.
You can call around where you live.
