Ford expedition filling tank gas spills out also getting check gas cap error

Recently encountered 2 problems with my 2003 ford expedition. First came the fueling issue. Can't fuel up without gas spilling out before the pump shuts off. The second problem arrose just a few days later with the error message about needing to check the fuel cap. Dealership said its just the gas cap, we replaced it and both problems still exhist...any help would be appreciated.

SOURCE: fuel spills out when I fill up.

It is the filler neck it causes splash back.

SOURCE: When I pump gas, it will spill out of the tank when its not full

there is a vent pipe/tube that runs along the fill pipe, this vent allows air out of the tank when u fill it, it has to be obstructed, replace it.

Turn the handle 1 way or the other to follow the path of the fill spout as it is at an extreme angle beyond the filler nozzle portion.

My trouble code is p0456 what is my problem my check egine lite is on

There is a small air leak in the vehicles Evap system. This includes the fuel cap, fuel filler neck, fuel tank, all evap lines and solenoids that could be the problem. Most common are the filler neck where the gas cap goes...sometime you can see small cracks.

I put gas in my 200 ford expedition and my service engine soon light came on and it started to drive funny.

It is possible that you left the gas cap too loose, but that shouldn't cause the driving funny thing. What do you mean funny? Did you fill it all the way up and then go even more? If so, you could have over filled it and gotten gas into the evaporative canister which is only supposed to pull air and may now be pulling gas as well causing it to run funny.
Hope this help. Good luck!

An error code of 0457 came up. any idea what that is?

P0457 FORD - EVAP Control System Leak Detected (Fuel Filler Cap Loose/Off)
EVAP control system has a very large leak such as fuel filler cap fell off, EVAP control system does not operate properly.

Vehicles that meet enhanced evaporative requirements utilize a vacuum-based evaporative system integrity check. The evap system integrity check uses a Fuel Tank Pressure Transducer (FTPT), a Canister Vent Solenoid (CVS) and Fuel Level Input (FLI) along with the Vapor Management Valve (VMV) or Electric Vapor Management Valve (EVMV) to find 0.040" diameter or larger evap system leaks. Federal vehicles can utilize a 0.040" leak check rather than the 0.020" leak check required for California vehicles (click over pic for zoom).

- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Possible a noticeable fuel odor caused by the release of fuel vapors

Possible causes:
- Missing fuel filler cap
- Incorrect fuel filler cap used
- Fuel filler cap remains open or fails to close
- Foreign matter caught in fuel filler cap

Possible solution:
- Retight or replaced fuel tank filler cap

Tech notes:
It is a very common problem with Ford vehicles. There are service bulletins for the following vehciles:
1997-2000 Ford CONTOUR
1997-2002 Ford ESCORT
1998-2003 Ford ESCORT ZX2
2000-2003 Ford FOCUS
2002-2003 Ford THUNDERBIRD
1997 F-250 Ford HD
1997-1999 Ford Ford F-250 LD
1999-2003 Ford F SUPER DUTY
2000-2003 Ford EXCURSION

Also, in this link could check this Ford Bulletin.

Hope helps (remember to rate and comment this answer).

Gas overflows when fillingtank.

This sounds like the gas tank vent pipe is obstructed.

Sounds like you might have a breather hose that is pinched.
