Question about Toyota Camry

Need toyota expert please.I completely rebuilt the engine on my 1998 toyota camry. I drove it for 11 months with no problem. then the oil light came on. The oil level was fine . I checked the oil pressure with a manuel oil pressure guage and got 5-8 psi. I checked the oil pump and relief valve . I replaced the oil pump and had the same problem.I took off the valve cover and I do have oil on the top end of the motor. When I started the car the oil went up on the windshield of the car. I blew air through the pressure side of the block where oil pump, pumps the oil through and checked witha manuel oil guage and got 30 psi. I am pumimg in 100 psi but the mauel guage shows 30 psi. I alsready replaced the oil sending unit. Do you have any ideas on what I should be looking for to fix this problem ?

That does not happen only on Toyota.
If you already replaced oil pump, and newly installed pump is working, there is no oil leak and you already checked oil lines to exclude blockage, that can be due to a cracked or incorrectly installed head gasket (eg. wrong torque on head bolts when mounting head).
Often when that happens you have also coolant liquid going down and traces of oil in coolant reservoir.
Have a look.

Do not forget to leave feedback afterward.

Thanks.

Its the sending unit (switch) and not the oil pump problem .checke the FSM where the switch is but there is a procedure to use a pressure testing tool on the orifice where the switch goes. I'm guessing you can rent one at Autozone or maybe buy one for cheap? The sending unit itself is suposedly near the oilfilter/pump area on the bottom of the engine and should be easy to replace yourself. While the FSM shows no pictures it does give torque specs so be careful with the new unit because they can be easily damaged.

the other possibility is the sensor got faulty
Location of the sensor (right above the oil plug).

thanks.keep updated.

Oil light on when oil is full

a loose connection WILL NOT cause flickering oil light unless your your oil is empty at the same time a connector is loose. This flickering is most likely caused by clogged oil ports or failing oil pump. When this happens there is insufficient oil running through the engine, causing the sensor to activate the light intermittedly. Have this checked immediately to prevent extensive engine damage. Hopefully this helps!!

SAME AS JANDCALLEN ON DEC 02 2009

Call the Toyota coustmer care service center they may help, however the filter coming completely off with out the oil light is almost impossible. the oil light should have come on right away, and since it was not done at the Toyota dealer they have no liability or responsibility to fix it as they were not the ones that did the oil change. If the independent shop did the oil change and did not replace the oil filter with the correct filter they could be held liable but after 3.5 months anything could of happened. Including a prankster that loosened up the filter for a laugh or someone your grandpa may have **********. However it will be impossible to know for sure and there is no evidence of what happened. normally if a oil filter is going to leak it would happen right away or within a few miles. Spend the money to talk to a lawyer for this problem but your pretty much done. The shop offering the labor to replace the filter is doing so as a gesture of good will and not of out of their neglect. So you are in a tough spot. Neither company is at fault and they would say he would be responsible for seeing the check engine and the oil light coming on before the filter came off. once the filter was loose the oil would come out so rapidly that the engine would seize before the filter ever fell off. That's why I tell my customers to use Dura Lube in there engines so that if this happens Dura Lube will replace the engine at no cost to you. That advise is a little late but now you have it use it in your own cars and trucks. I have put Dura lube in a engine and drained the oil and antifreeze out of the motor and drove it around and it never heated up nor did it damage the engine. afterwords we tore the engine down and checked the main and rod bearings and even after driving it for 30 minutes without oil or water there was no damage, so he is going to have to pay for this one. Sorry most experts would not have answered this because the person asking this question would rate the expert bad for giving the bad news, I replied so you would have a answer sorry.

I have a 1998 toyota camry le with 131,000 miles. last month, I noticed that there is a ticking sound coming from the engine compartment. as i give it gas the sound speeds up with the engine. there was no...

sounds like lifters, rods normally make a knocking sound try putting a couple of bottles of engine flush in and run the car around the block a couple of time then drain the oil and change the filter and replace the oil with a quality 15w 40 grade oil and see if the noise clears up. if it is still there you can try product called moreys oil addative this often helps quiet down liftes if still no good oyu may need to replace your lifters

Low oil pressure

Just guessing, but it sounds like you are loosing pressure from the bearings.....If you had the crankshaft journals cut, or if they were slightly out of round to begin with, this can happen. Cutting removes material...the journals on most modern engines are too thin to do this (same weight saving idea that gave us rotors that you need to throw away) After cutting, they go egg shaped. Not cutting and starting with out of round condition will essentially give you the same problem but may take a bit longer to fail.
Of course, check all clearances and sealing points, but I believe that's where you will find the problem.

it sounds like your oil pressure sending unit may be plugged by whatever took your pressure down to 5-8 psi the first time. this is extremely low pressure as i am sure you know but at 30 psi your light should go off i would replace the sending unit if your oil pressure is holding 30

2002 toyota engine, oil sludgecaused my car to stopped and now needs overhaul

Complain to Toyota, they are fixing some of these car for free. Here is the explanation and the list of problem vehicles.

Oil sludge or black sludge is a solid or gel in motor oil caused by the oil gelling or solidifying, usually at temperatures lower than 100 degrees Celsius. Sludge can be a major contributor to Internal combustion engine problems, and can require the engine to be replaced, if the damage is severe. Sludge is usually caused by the presence of water in the oil, and can accumulate with use. Ways to minimize sludge production and accumulation includes performing frequent oil changes, using synthetic oil, and following the manufacturer's engine maintenance routine.
The following engines were reported by the Center for Auto Safety and/or their manufacturers to have a problem with sludge accumulation:

  • 1996-2001 Toyota 3.0 L 1MZ V6
  • 1996-2001 Toyota 5SFE I4
