Why do you think it should be on? The service engine light should come on for a couple of seconds when you first turn your key on, but that's it unless there is something wrong. Does it do that?

The check engine light is turned on by the ECM. (computer) Make sure the bulb is good. For a 1989 you don't need a code reader, just an ALDL grounding tool to read out codes.

Check engine light

You must connect an ODB-II code reader to determine what codes are stored (which will also indicate what has failed in your car that caused the Check Engine light to illuminate). Once you have repaired the defects, the ODB-II code reader may be used to reset the stored code condition.

Emissions warning light iluminated

Hello read and understand why.
When the service engine soon light (Also called the check engine light or engine management light) is turned on this is to alert you to the fact that Powertrain Control Module (computer) has detected a failure somewhere in the systems it controls you may not feel any difference in the way the engine runs, this can be the transmission or the engine or emission system, there are fault codes set in the modules memory for these faults. What needs to happen now is to have the powertrain control module scanned with a special tool called an OBD2 electronic engine control scanner or a OBD2 code reader. Once the code(s) are read then you must perform the diagnostics for each code and make the appropriate repairs based on the findings of the diagnosis that was performed, this is called doing "Pinpoint" testing.

Check engine light on

when the check engine light is illuminated in your vehicle, it means that the on board self diagnostic system has detected a fault either in the engine, transmission, or accessory controls. when this light is illuminated, it means that there is a code stored in the vehicle memory which can be extracted with a code reader. any garage should be able to do this for you. good luck!

How do you reset service engine light on a ford excursion

The "service" engine light is on for a reason, the On Board Diagnostic (OBD) is sensing a problem with some part of the car. The service light will stay on until the problem is resolved. It is unlikely that the problem will resolve by itself and so it needs human intervention. You or a mechanic can hook up an OBD code reader and determine what code(s) is causing the engine light to illuminate. If you want to do it yourself, a simple code reader can be purchased for about $100+, you usually get what you pay for. Also, some auto part stores offer to hook up their code reader in hopes that you'll purchase the repair parts from them. Once the problem is determined, it can be repaired, and the car should turn the service light off. It is also possible to turn off the service light with the OBD code reader, but this is not advisable for the novice to do. For more help, contact me again at FixYa and I will be glad to assist.

Engine light is on

The check engine light illuminates to tell you a problem exists. It also triggers a trouble code. You need to get the vehicle's trouble codes read using an OBD-II code reader. Without that it's just guessing ;-) Post back when you get the codes or look them up at OBD-Codes.com.
