Replacing water pump

My husband is trying to replace the water pump on my 1995 jeep grand cherokee following the instructions per the Haynes manual. it's telling him he needs a spanner wrench. i've tried googling this but all i see are regular open ended wrenches. any suggestions?

If it is a 318 (5.2) the spanner wrench is for the fan to be removed. He can overcome this obstacle with a hammer and a prybar of about 18 inches or so. Just place the edge of the prybar on the left side of the nut near the outer edge and smack it a few times to break it loose. Then he can turn it by hand to remove it. Do the same thing to reinstall hitting the right side.

Ok, so I just looked in my Jeep Cherokee Hayes manual, but it didn't say anything about a spanner wrench, but the Grand Cherokee could be different. Your best bet is to go to Autozone and tell them what you are doing. They have a free loan-a-tool service. You can leave a small deposit with them and borrow the tool, then you get the deposit back when you return it. Just take the manual with you to the store to show them what you need. Let me know if this help :)

Your starter does not actually start your car. It's only job is to turn the engine so it can start. (actually replaces the crank people used to need to put into the front of the car and physically crank (turn) the engine...hence the term "cranking")
The two most common causes of the problem you are having is either the crank position sensor or fuel pump has failed. Easy way to determine if the pump is bad is to listen to the gas tank when you turn the key to the "on" position...You should be able to hear it. CPS needs to be checked with a digital ohmmeter Best instructions for electrical testing can be found in chilton manuals available in most large parts stores. Haynes is somewhat useful but a bit too basic for any real electrical diagnosis. All sensors are expensive (min of $90 each) so testing is important so you don't end up throwing $ at it with no results.

Need to replace water pump

It's not an impossible job, but too long to write out instructions. I suggest that you get an inexpensive manual for your car (haynes is about $20) and follow instructions there. If you run into any specific problems, give me a shout! (just curious ...why are you changing the pump?)
