Security light comes on in .

Shutting engine off and removing the key then reinserting cures this problem, but excessive use of starter. How do I fix this problem?

By security light if you mean the anti-theft, that is what should happen. Once you switch off the shows the vehicle is armed. When you restart, it goes off.

Why is my starter not turning my engine?

Sounds like the bendix is stuck. When the starter motor spins, the inertia makes the gear that engages with the flywheel fly forward and engage. When you release the key the gear returns back to its at rest position. To fix it, remove the starter motor, flood the helical grooves with WD40 to clean it, then apply light machine oil like 3 in 1 and then wipe off an excess oil.

Security light on and van keeps cutting off

The security light comes on or stays on when the module does not "see" the correct chip in the key.
Normally the system only works when you crank the engine, not after it is running. So if the light is coming on after the engine is running, and the engine also quits, I would look for an electrical problem with the key switch or the computer.

Trying to replace a starter on a 95 olds cutless ciera sl, how many bolts are there to remove?

Just on a hunch, before you go switching the starter, make sure there is no light on the dash that says "security" when it wont start. The Vats security that is in your car, (little black chip in key) is know for shutting of starters. If so, check out this link. http://vatspasslockpasskeysecurityhelp.yolasite.com/

When there is excessive current drain when you try to start, then it is likely there is binding or internal shorting.
If when you stop trying to start, the 6 volts comes back up to 12, then the battery is good and it really is excessive starter draw.
I mention that because an over night drain from something staying on could also require a jump, even though there was not excessive starter draw.

But since you have a new starter, there is always the chance the engine itself is binding.
Perhaps from a bad bearing.
The way to tell is to remove the spark plugs.
See how it turns over by hand, compared to another engine.
Check oil pressure.
Look for metal flakes in the oil change or pan.

One last hope is that the starter has the wrong number of teeth, and is not a perfect fit, was not installed or aligned correctly, etc.
Or perhaps there is a bushing that is worn, like the old VW's used to have in the bellhousing.

Check the battery connections--especially the positive terminal. Use a special wire brush tool from an auto parts store (cheap) to clean the posts and terminal interiors. Check the cable going into the terminal for corrosion as well--it may have damaged the interior wire. If no help, use a test light or meter to check for power at the starter solenoid. When the key is turned, you should hear a fairly loud 'click' from the solenoid. If it clicks, test for power at the starter terminal--when it clicks, power should appear at the starter. If so, the starter motor is defective and should be replaced. If no power, then the solenoid is defective. If no click at all, check the neutral safety switch for the automatic transmission or maybe the key switch itself. Hope this helps!

2000 pontiac bonneville wont start

It sounds like a bad connection somewhere, check the battery cable connections for corrosion and tightness, both ends. It could be the starter, starter solenoid, starter relay, neutral safety switch or ignition. Try moving the shift lever to the "N" position and see if that helps. When you say you have a dead key, do you mean you have no dash lights, (oil pressure light, battery light, things of that nature) no clicking, no nothing?

Turn ignition key but won't start..All power on, is it starter?

Can be a Junk Relay, access is limited, but giving the Starter a "crack" with a mallet, often cures the problem temporarily. But check the Battery terminals, and Cable to the Starter solenoid ,first for tightness and security.

I had a wire connector on the front of the engine that had so much tension, the wires broke. I didn't notice until a wet day when the car wouldn't start (and the Check Engine light was on). (The error code was related to an Emissions error.) The connector is located on the engine, front, just left of center. Hope this helps!
