You could try repair with mechanical metal. its like a paste that hardens with heat. Hardens to a point that you can drill it and cut it like metal. It all depends on the size of the hole. If its big a mechanic might be able to weld it. Chances are though its going to have to be replaced.

SOURCE: drivers side exhaust manifold leak.

You will be very lucky to extract the studs whilst in the vehicle. Drop the front pipe. Sounds harder, but, in reality, much easier.

SOURCE: I have a hole in my exhaust manifold

A little bit of work is involved here. Don't attempt unless you have quite an assortment of tools. A lot has to come off to complete this repair. You need to be a better than a beginner mechanic to do this.

SOURCE: exhaust manifold has a leak planning on drive

All possible damage to your car aside, you could potentially fill the car with exhaust gas. Best case you'll get woozy or a headache. Worst case you could pass out while driving. It is not a good idea.

WHERE TO LOOK FOR EXHAUST LEAK

There are several areas to check for possible exhaust leaks. i will list them below.

1. Exhaust manifold gaskets - This will be the most common area. There is a gasket that separates the block from the exhaust manifold. these gaskets can fail, thus, causing a exhaust leak at the manifold.

2. Lower manifold gasket(donut gasket) - This will be a possible leak spot as well. This small circular gasket is placed in between the upper exhaust pie and the lower side of the manifold. It basically separates the pipe from the exhaust manifold.

3. Exhaust pipe - The entire pipe can rust overtime, thus, creating small holes along the pipe structure. These holes will cause the exhaust to leak ,thus, filling the vehicle will moderate fumes and causing louder than normal engine sounds during revving.

4. Muffler - This component can also deteriorate to the point that it cannot filter out the noise. It will also cause leaks as well.

You will find the leak in one or all of the areas stated above in the list.

Yes it will turn on light. Replace exhaust manifold only if it is leaking. It could just be loose or damaged gasket or hole or crack pipe.

Had a mechanic try to fix exhaust leak @ manifold, they broke bolt off then tapped hole @ an angle. still have leak.can I double up on the gasket to possibably fix problem

If you think that the angled stud is stopping the manifold tightening enough to seal, an extra gasket could possibly fix the leak. If possible it would be better to **** the hole in the manifold so that it could pull up tighter on one gasket.

Exhaust leak

they don't go into the water jacket, but be careful not to drill any deeper than the bottom of the bolt hole or you can go through to the water jacket, a piece of rubber vacuum hose over the drill works well to limit the drill depth.
