I bought a 99 zx2 with broken timing belt replaced it with new belt tensioners etc.But can not get timing to line up properly.I KNOW TIMING THE CAMS WITH A FLAT BAR AT THE BACK BUT CAN NOT GET IN TIME WITH THE CRANK. THERE ARE 2 LITTLE MARKS BARELY NOTICEABLE ON THE HARMONIC balancer and a mark on the oil pan cover is this what I use ?Also I read that if the oil pump is dry you have turn it over abuot ten times to take the free play out of the cam to prevent it from rolling back is this correct any help would be grateful

Take no 1 spark out and using a long thin screwdriver bring piston up to top then you have tdc,you will have to move cams to get it to come up but iam sure you will have the valves bent from when the belt broke ,remember to turn it over with a ratchet before you use the starter motor ,once timed up the belts hold the cams in place

right i follow sorry for the confusion, what i do is time it all up,then hook a spring between the tensioner and the bolt that holds the chain guide on top between the two cams,if you try turning it over the chan slips ---- tell me about it.the spring holds the tensioner out so you can start the engine with teh rocker covers on and then once its running then remove the rocker cover and remove the spring because the oil pressure has lock the tensioner out.

1998 Subaru Legacy L - Is there a timing belt?

yes, there is a big belt and it is a job to replace, remove just about everything up front, radiator, timing covers, fan, belts, pulleys, hoses, etc, I think you change the water pump at the same time, not sure, But get the new belt with timing marks on it, they come in real handy, clamp the cams so they don't retract, before pulling the belt, put a pin in the belt tensioner hole if it has one, then pull the belt off, align all the marks, they have to be perfect, or don't bother. When it is all set to the marks, release the tension on the tensioner and spin the engine by hand with spark plugs removed , a couple times, when it comes around to one mark again, check them all, they all should be right on the mark. If you can't find a belt with the marks on it already, mark the old belt, with a white out pen or junk yard pen, relay the marks to the new belt. Then try it, it is most important that they line up. Crank and cams, all have marks on them. Hope this helps.

Trying to get diagram to change a timing belt for a 99 mercury mystique

Ford TSB 99-25-4 provides the following corrected information:
To achieve proper timing belt tension on this engine, Ford says the camshaft sprocket bolts should be loosened enough to permit the sprockets to turn freely on the camshafts. Once this has been done, rotate the crankshaft clockwise so cylinder No. 1 is at top dead center. Then, install the camshaft alignment tool in the camshaft slots to hold the cams in place.
  1. Back out the tensioner bolt four full turns and position the tensioner so the locating tab is at approximately the 4 o'clock position. Line up the hex key slot in the tensioner-adjusting washer with the pointer that is located behind the pulley.
  2. Working counterclockwise from the crank sprocket, install the timing belt.
  3. Rotate the tensioner locating tab counterclockwise and insert the locating tab into the slot in the rear timing cover.
  4. Position the hex key slot in the tensioner-adjusting washer to the 4 o'clock position.p>
  5. Tighten the attaching bolt enough to seat the tensioner firmly against the rear timing cover, but still allow the tensioner adjusting washer to be rotated using a 6 mm hex key.
  6. Using the hex key, rotate the adjusting washer counterclockwise until the notch in the pointer is centered over the index line on the locating tab. (The pointer will move in a clockwise direction during adjustment).
  7. While holding the adjusting washer in position, torque the attaching bolt to 18 lb-ft (25 N.m).
Note: If the pointer does not remain centered over the index line during final tightening, loosen the bolt and repeat the procedure beginning with step 4.

99 ford contour 2.0 dohc timing belt replacement... i have the alignment tool and blanking plug but which way are the cams turned to align?

Engine Timing Belt/Chain Illustration
Figure 1
fm1069500554000x.pngBefore installing tool. If the belt broke turn the engine so the #1 piston is half way up. This way you will not bend the valves while turning cams. If you feel that the cams are very hard to turn or stops turning then turn crank by hand to lower piston away from valve. Then turn the cams clockwise or counter clockwise slow one at a time too the proper slot position for the tool to fit. Once the cam marks are lined up bring the #1 piston to its TDC.

99 Volvo S80 water pump replacement

if this helps.. I had the 1998 model S70. the water pump was driven by the timing belt. you had to take the timing belt off just to replace the water pump. it was just a simple bolt on replacement. the only difficult issue is resetting the hydraulic tensioner on the timing belt. the hydraulic tensioner has to be completely taken off and compressed VERY SLOWLY in a vise. then insert a very hard drill bit or (special volvo tool) into a keeper hole, reinstall hydraulic tensioner onto car and reinstall timing belt.very quickly remove drill bit from keeper hole in tensioner and the tensioner snaps back out to put tension on belt. and you are done.

Timing zx2 escort TDC ?

The cams have a notch in the back of them (facing driver's side) in which fits a flat piece of steel to lock the cams in place. The notches are not exactly centered on the camshaft, meaning that it's impossible to set them 180 degrees out, because then the flat piece of steel that is supposed to be inserted to lock the cams in place simply won't fit because the top of the cylinder head will get in the way. I highly recommend getting a Hayne's or Chiltons manual if you don't already have one. It should explain this process under the Timing Belt Replacement instructions. The cam lock tool (that flat piece of steel) can be purchased at ZXturner.com:
