White smoke means your engine is burning it's antifreeze. You have a problem with either: an intake gasket or a head gasket

What is causing engine running too rich when idling

I would check to see if there is a restriction in the fuel return lines. Also the o2 sensor might be lazy.

2004. After top end rebuild, new valves and seals and gasket, why is there oil in all 4 exhaust ports which is causing plumes of smoke?

if you mean blueish smoke getting out of the exhaust then it sounds like piston rings are worn out (normally this is a symptom after 150000km and above) if you mean that theres oil around the outtakes of the engine then something gone wrong with the planing of the top cover; with the tightening of the top cover bolts ex wrong sequence or with the fitting of the gasket...

General rules of thumb: Low speed engine on acceleration with smoke in the exhaust plume = worn piston rings High speed engine accelerating (spooled up turbo) with smoke = oil form turbo bearing and/or piston rings Engine on over run (coasting down, foot off the gas) with smoke = oil from valve guides. VW/Audi make good engines with tight tolerances so none of the above should apply at 62K miles; just make sure that the oil (the right oil) and oil filter are changed regularly.

When starting up even when warm a large plume of smoke comes out and the car stinks of burning oil

when you turn off,the engine is still sucking air in so a small amount of oil passes down the valve guides, into the cylinders,If excessive smoke produced you will need valve guides.around 150k is about right......

Jag X TYPE Diesel Black smoke coming from exhaust on acceleration

i had this problem and thought the fuel filter oil filter needed replacing so i have just had a service done but problem is still there but not as bad. been told it could be the AGR valve or a split pipe going to it which recuirculates unused fuel back to burn again. therefore unspent fuel is coming out of the exhaust causing the black smoke. i am still looking for the answer aswell, hope this helps.
