Question about 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe

Poor performance,hard on fuel,shifts all 5 gears at low rpm only

Service engine light intermitent-will only shift when you take your foot of the accelerator -transmission down shits and stays at hight rpm until removing foot from accelerator-fuel consumption 1/4 tank/25km! [its parked in the driveway HELP!!!] LOVE MY 04 3.5 Santa Fe.

Hi,I would get the codes checked,possibly a faulty TPS or just that silly multi plug near the firewall RHS.

answering for won't move in drive , Reverse or low. or 2nd.gear
in an automatic trans, stick shifts like mine are different.
in drive.? right foot pressing hard.
if rpm races fast and high , that is transmission slip (trans issues)

My 1995 isuzu bighorn need hard to shift into 2nd gear if the engine is not in peak temperature. I need to step the accelerator up to 2000 rpm before it shift to 2nd gear, but if the temperature goes up...

It's a switch that slightly changes shift points. In performance , the trans shift at a slightly higher rpm and in normal......shifts a bit lower rpm and also better fuel economy.

My dodge dakota it idles below 1000 rpms and it sounds like its about to stall. and if i rev it up and then let off it will stall instantly. when i am driving from first gear to second it goes up to 4000...


It is actually hard to say without actually seeing the vehicle, but the target speed for your engine idle is around 750 RPM. The stalling after revving kind of depends on how high you are revving it and whether the engine is at operating temperature or not. This may be normal. Then again, it could be that the Idle Air Control (IAC) is not working properly.

The shifting from first to second at 4000 RPM sounds like a completely separate problem. This could be due to low transmission fluid level, sticking shift control solenoids, or possibly even a malfunctioning Vehicle Speed Sensor.

If the Check Engine light is on, have that checked first.

sounds like restricted fuel filter or restricted exhaust.
your local exhaust shop can perform a simple and free test to see if the cat can is plugged.

With normal acceleration the 1st to second shift point should be around 2500-3000 rpm. Most of your shifts under moderate acceleration will take place at this same point or when there a light load on the transmission. Under hard acceleration the RPMs will climp higher due to increased power needs and the computer will shift when less power is needed or the RPMs climb to an unsafe speed say5000-6000rpms (depending on where yours redlines). Also going up a steep hill will raise the RPMs higher and goind down a hill will cause a faster shift at lower RPMs. These can always be altered by an individual owner by adjusting shift points, using performance parts and if you have problems (low tranny fluid/trans issues). Your trans RPMS are fine and will vary depening on how your foot accelerates. The shift pattern should be the same every time you drive slow/medium/fast/, look for changes in those patterns you will also catch a problem early.
