Behind the glove box is some colored vacuum lines. One connects to a vacuum motor that opens and closes the vent you mentioned. Check there first. You can usually pull both sides of the g/b inward to open fully. Also listen for hissing sound behind glovebox while running. If a vac line is disconnected it will make that sound

Open hood , passenger side firewall area, look for a thin, black vacuum line, follow it and look for any breaks or bad connection to its vacuum source. repair as necessary.

SOURCE: Vent control

You have a vacuum leak.Defrost is the default postion(no vacuum).
See if you can locate the small black vacuum line that goes inside the vehicle on the passenger side near the heater core. The trace it back, should see it going to a canister then to the intake manifold.Make sure it is not disconnected or broken somewhere.

Make sure radiator is full of coolant, this system heats the vehicle, also if you can smell coolant it may be a bad or leaking heater core? Hope this helps?

Often a sign of a blend door problem. The blend door or doors are in the heater a/c box behind the dash.

Air blows out thru the vents but just no hot air, aslo i have to hit the dash for the air to come out thru the dash vents at times.

sounds like bad acuator motor, this is what moves the door in heater box to set hot or cold air, and other motors to set air to blow thru defrost, vent or floor. good luck.
