SOURCE: fault p1556 p1144 17552 on a 2003 passat.

air filters cost less than 10 euro, replace them every 10,000 miles and you will never have a problem. Also if you use a fuel additive such as "DIPTANE" you will clean up on emmissions, and the environment, and fuel bills. another cheap fix I had from driving vw's was, GET A TOYOTA. CHEAP AS CHIPS. also just as reliable, without as much hassle. VW like to be AUDI and charge you more than MERCEDES

SOURCE: Engine stops while driving & engine revs high between gear change

hi i am dieter
im dave

here is something to try
keep some cold water with you and the next time it happens very quickly get out and pour the water on the crankshaft sensor then restart. If it starts right away without the usual two minutes than you will need to change this sensor. The sensor is easy to find you will see a wiring harness around the crankshaft pulley(the large one at the bottom the basically runs all your accessories like the p/s pump, alternator, water pump). Try to famaliarize yourself as to the location of the sensor first so that you can try to restart it within about 30 seconds.

SOURCE: Trans shifts very hard after 5 minutes of stop and go traffic

A reason for hard shifting could be a problem with many things with various degrees of seriousness. It could be your ATF( automatic transmission fluid) is low or broken down and old. This would cause the hardness and the reason for stop and go traffic effecting it. Another possibility is your transmission is just shot, and the timing gears inside are worn and not properly shifting at the correct RPM causing a **** during shifting.

Some possibilties, not all!

Throttle Body Cleaning on vehicles without electronic throttle control (most 2003 and down)

You can in most cases repair this slow speed stall or unstable idle by cleaning the engine throttle valve and the idle speed control valve using a product called CRC Spray Throttle valve cleaner. Spray the cleaner into the air intake of the engine with the hose removed from the throttle body, the engine will try to stall so hold up the idle speed manually. Once you have used up about 1/2 can of the cleaner stall the engine out while spraying and turn the key off, disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 minutes and then reconnect and drive the car for a about 25 miles of varied driving modes. If this doesn't cure the problem you may need the fuel injectors professionally cleaned by the dealer service dept.

I am trying to find a maintenance schedule for my 2003 Passat...it has almost 130K miles on it, but everywhere I look the maintenance schedules stop at 100K. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

The 100K schedule repeats continually.
What needs to be done at 50K and 100K, then needs to be repeated at 150K for example.
The schedule only needs to go out to the longest delayed item.

How do you know when your timing belt is going. I own a 2003 passet, and the engine light is one, but it says its an emission issue. Is there a clear cut warning sign that it's starting to go?

hi to be honest...no these have a mileage limit that they advise you to change them, but most people do it before this time there is no warning as to when they will go, if you are unsure, and if it has done 60,000 miles + then i would change it to be on the safe side..and this will be an emissions fault, it will more than likely be one of the o2 sensors on the exhaust..but the error code should tell you what it is exactly...hope this helps

Timing belt for 2003 ,1.6 passat petrol

Volkswagen recommend a visual check(for this model) at the first 60,000 miles and then every 20,000 (replace if necessary). There is no manufacturer's recommended replacement interval. (Information gained from Autodata).
However most manufacturer's for the majority of models recommend a change at 72,000 or 5 years whichever comes first.
It is now known that a visual check is not reliable because the kevlar strands inside the belt break down over time and an indication of expected breakage is impossible to gauge.
Using the '72,000 or 5 year' advise, a belt change for anything older than a 2004 vehicle would be a good idea.
In money terms, a change of belt will cost 5 to 15% the cost of belt failure.
