    Hi Karl_dbest,

Reading my provious message I realise that I wasn't clear enough. The loss of power occured whilst driving and resulted in the car stopping. The power is not electrical power but lack of responsiveness from the engine when pressing the accelerating pedal.

The engine is now rotating but doesn't start (or "ignite" if this can be said for a diesel engine). In other words the engine is only moved by the electrical power from the battery.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi lippylou75 - No I haven't changed the heater plugs. Could this be causing the problem (I have just added some more details as I might not have been very clear in my description)?

Is there a way of checking if the heater plug could be faulty?

Either charge or replace your battery or check for any faulty wires that could have been damaged by the excess loss of power if it was due to a short circuit.

Sounds to be a security problem. Check or replace the battery in the key first. After that. It has to go on a scanner. You might want to get it to an Audi dealer for this. I have several scanners that tell me codes, but I can't do the Audi security.

1st & 2nd gear, then complete loss of power. audi a4 tdi 2007

I presume you experienced a loss of full power but had enough to get home. The check engine lamp came on too?

It seems your engine is in limp mode due to a possible over boost pressure . The ECU runs the engine with reduced power after an over boost is detected. If you cycle the ignition key and power comes back, this is most likely problem.

A fauliy N75 solenoid, with three small bore vacuum hoses and an electrical plug/connector, is possible cause .

This over boost can be caused by sticking vanes inside the turbo .

Have it scanned and read the codes. Code P0234 will be set if over boost occurred.

I have an Audi a4 2.5 tdi cabriolet It starts eventually but takes ages What would cause this

open the door, get in,put the key in the ignition(do not turn on)put your belt on then turn the key to start. As the engine heater plugs are operated by the opening of the drivers door this "routine" is needed to start the car first time.If this doesnt work then the first thing to replace is the heater plugs, after checking the fuse is good.

Non start turns over changed relay switches near e c u as water entered its 1.9 tdi audi 02 plate

the ecu can still be wet or damaged by the water. You may need to get another but the dashboard console with the instruments must go with the ecu you use, they are coded together.

You need to have the vehicle scanned for trouble codes. You local mechanic can do this, or what I suggest is you take it into like Autozone or similar. They will normally scan free of charge. This way you know what the car is telling you. Hard to say or know what the challenge is without the code.

Engine starts after about 20 seconds

my 215000mile Audi a4 starts immediately every time. Very likely to be timing related, especially if it was okay before the belt change. Hard starting for slightly mistimed engines is a known problem.

Starter switch. Plastic and cheap, my 98 A6 did the same thing... I replaced thousands in parts, turned out to be a cracked ignition switch which is a very common Audi problem!
