90 jeep starting problem

I have a 1990 jeep cherokee that sometimes will not start, the engine cranks over, but will not start. sometimes you can go days even weeks and will start no problem.most of the time when it won't start you can try after about a half hour and it will start. One time I spent all day tryin until I finally had it towed home, and it started right after it came off the tow truck. You never know when it's going to start. I have changed the fuel pump, fuel pump relay, cap & rotor, plugs & wires. Engine is a 6 cyl. 4.0 . this problem happens hot or cold. Can somebody help me please.

I know you said you changed the fuel pump but have you tried to shoot a little starting fluid in the air cleaner when its in that no start mode ? if it were to start it would tell you its not getting fuel proper.. just an idea . thanks Jerry

Try replacing the wire from the positive battery cable to the small terminal it is attched to. It is the smaller gauge wire that is attched to the battery terminal. Be sure to use the right gauge, don't over or undersize it. I had this problem and it did'nt stop until I changed this. Without this wire in good condition, the starter will crank too slow or not crank at all, mimicking other problems (like bad battery, bad starter , etc.). Post if it works.

Will not start

If the check engine light does NOT come on when cranking at the times when it won't start, then your ECU is in need of repair. The engine will only start after the check engine light comes on and the ecu is what controls that. It's likely going bad, causing the delayed start problem typical of early 90's jeeps. Repair or replacement services for your jeep ECU are available on ebay.

Replaced starter still wont start soliniod good 90

if the motor turn over but will not start try looking at the cps(crank position sensor)it would create a no spark condition. its located at the back of the engine right at the bell housing for the transmission.you can test it with an ohms meter or just replace it.

1990 Cherokee starts but cranks for awhile

Try this: turn key on for 5 seconds, but dont start. turn it off and turn it on again for 5 seconds then try to start it. If it starts up better, you need to test the fuel pressure.
hook up a test gauge to the test port on the fuel rail, try to start and watch fuel pressure, after it builds.to its max turn engine off, it should then hold pressure for a few or more minutes. if it doesnt there are three things that can let it bleed down.

There is a check valve built into the fuel pump that could be stuck open,
An injector could be leaking,
Or the pressure regulator could be leaking.
If it still has problem check your spark plugs to see if they are worn out with too much gap.

I have a 1990 Jeep Cherokee Starts then shuts off

Sounds like insufficient fuel delivery. Likely problem is the fuel filter is plugged.

Check the crank position sensor. I had the same problem in a 1989 cherokee 4.0, and the solution was simply to acomodate the sensor wiring. No replace was necesary

Jeep cherokee 1990

The 1987-90 Jeep Cherokee with the Renix Eletronic Engine controls take somewhere between 4-7 revolutions before the computer has enough information to get the engine started.

If it takes longe rthan that, it may be time for a full tune-up:
Distibutor Cap and rotor
Spark plugs
Spark Plug wires
Fuel filter
Air filter
and possibly an oxygen sensor
