A faulty engine coolant temperature sensor can also cause the p0420 error code.
But more than likely you have some sort of exhaust leak.  It was hard to figure out if you had this checked out from reading your past comments.  I know you had the cat converters checked but did the muffler shop or dealer look for exhaust leaks at the manifold?  Check those two things out and surely it's got to be one of those

Hi there.

This is an easy problem, sorry about all this confusion.

P0420 and P0430 are not indicating defective O2 sensors.
And also the problem has nothing to do with the camshaft sensor. That is even further from reality.

P0420 means Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold, Bank 1

P0430 means Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold, Bank 2

It means that the O2 sensors are good, and the O2 sensors are telling you that your catalytic converter, in the exhaust system is not working fine, as its emissions are polluting the air too much.

The catalytic converter is part of the exhaust system. The way to test this part is by doing an emission test. The two OBD codes that you are getting are already a test telling you that the converter must be replaced, unless an emission test done at a garage says the opposite.

This kind of problem will trigger the engine light, and your car will also waste too much fuel.
You also risk to get in trouble if the car goes through an Air Pollution control, as the car won't pass an emission test in this condition.

To conclude, the Catalyst System must be replaced, the O2 Sensors are fine.

This is a repair that should be done at a garage, however you can find DIY instructions here:How to Replace a Catalytic Converter or you can get more detailed instructions, and step by step illustrated procedure purchasing a repair manual.

Do not forget to leave feedback .

Many thanks.

To check the catalytic converter you need to do a complete emission test, did you do that? In that case do you have the test result to confirm that emissions are in range?

If a complete emission test had been done and emissions are in range , then the vaues from the O2 sensors are compared to standard parameters for your specific model by the ECU (car main control module). A faulty ECU may be causing the problem.

However this would be extremely unusual. More likely the emission test was not done properly and emissions are out of range, and the ECU is fine. Double check emissions doing a test at a qualified garage, the test is not expensive. In the US the cost ranges from $10 - $35, usually $19.

    Regards.

Yes you can have them checked with a pressure feed back system. But 98% of the time the problem will be in the coverters 420 is bank 1 and 430 is bank 2 .working for dodge the only way i have solved this issue is to replace which ever one is defective.thanks for your question

the o2 sensors will not fix the problem. But you can go to autozone and they will reset the computer for free!

I have looked up recalls for your car and there are quite a few. It seems to be an erroneous code problem with crank and camshaft position sensors and a whole bunch more. If you can, take the vehicle back to the dealership or service department and have the PCM checked out...

It says that the PCM has to be selectively erased and reprogrammed.

The one recall/bulletin number is:

18-032-02

There are more but this will get you started. You shouldn't have to pay out of pocket for anything involved with this recall. PERIOD.

Bring your car to the dealership. They usually have the computerized diagnostics. They charge minimal fee for that. Doing the computer diagnostics will isolate the problem.

I have a 03 pt cruiser turbo. For the past 10 mos the car engine light comes on and then is misfires on 2 cylinders. I have had the crank sensor replaced 3 times, cam sensor 3 times, map sensor, harness...

I don't profess to be able to solve this over this keyboard. But push come to shove I would replace the coils that are setting codes. As far as the dealer goes unless they can confirm the problem they will write NPF (no problem found)

DTC P0420 what is it?

P0420 CHRYSLER - Catalyst System Efficiency Bank 1 Low
Possible causes- Three way catalyst converter Bank 1
- Exhaust tube
- Intake air leaks
- Fuel injectors may be faulty
- Fuel injector leaks
- Spark plugs may be faulty
- Improper ignition timing
- Engine Control Module (ECM) Tech notes The most common cause it the three way catalyst converter Bank 1 is worn out. Changing just the O2 sensor/Catalytic efficiency monitor usually doesn't repair the problem. If the P0420 code is combined with other codes, try fixing the other codes first.

a common problem is the vacuum switching valves on the charcoal canister. These are small electrical solenoids with 2 vacuum hoses going to them. When you put power and ground to them they should click. Otherwise make sure there isn't a vacuum hose disconnected by the air cleaner box.

CODE P0420

Check for any exhaust leaks, hopefully your not burning oil, or losing coolant, and have exhaust checked for possible plugged catalytic converter.

Code problems

I think P0420 is catalytic converter efficiency, Bank 1. You will need to replace the converter to fix it. But if you live in an area that doesn't require emission testing you can just ignore it. It won't change the way the vehicle runs.
