96 c1500 2wd 5spd. engine has started sounding like its stuck in high idle, it feels as if something is putting a drag on the engine, it shifts through all 5 gears, but at 2.2 rpms the enginge reves up and stays there until i left off the gas, then when i get up speed to shift into the next gear, my engine reaches that same spot where it sounds like its reved up and makes a noise like i have it floored. this has never happened before. what could be causing this? i put premimum gas in, i put Lucas fuel enjector cleaner in, I checked tranmission fluid, i have checked everything. could the clutch be the problem, maybe its not dis engaging or its hanging up, I can shift through all gears, its just the engine sounds like its stuck in high idle. i have 143,000 miles, I bought my truck in 97, it had 12,000 miles, i drove it from Arizona to Michigan, lived there for 10 years then drove my truck back home to Arizona, i just put new tires on her, all 4, she has been a good truck overall. This issue with the engine has never happened before, i really hope its not something serious, can someone please tell me what to do to fix this?
Thank you,
Donna Plotts
It sounds like you have a vaccum leak more than likely. check near the intake manifold near the fire wall there are several vaccum lines there. also remove the the breather hose and check that your throttle plate is not sticking(this of course only applies if you have fuel injection. if you have a tbi or it's carburated check the throttle linkage to see if it's perhaps sticking
