Question about 1987 Chevrolet Camaro

87 Iroc (305 TPI) runs rough, lopes and lacks power in low RPMs

I have a 87 Iroc 305 Tuned Port Injection that is having some nasty issues. The engine starts without issues, however it will attempt to die at idle if you do not keep you're foot on the gas. It also smells like it is running really rich. At highway speeds, it seems fine, but driving around the city is horrible. While driving through parking lots or at a stop sign/light it lopes and attempts to die. I've replaced the MAF sensor, plugs (which the gap was verified), plug wires, distributor button and cap, PCV valve, & air filters. I just found the bypass wire and will be checking timing tomorrow; but other than that, I'm running out of ideas. Can anyone help?

Hi,

It sounds like a basic tune up is in order. I am not much on auto tranny stuff, so I'll bow out of that part. But on the dying, it sounds like the car just hasn't been maintained at all. Plugs ,rotor, distributor cap, maybe even plug wires, depending on your money situation. It could be something to do with your coldstartinjector .

change the trans fluid, put something like valvoline max life in it (some high milage fluid) and a thing of lucas trans fix, that could slove your problem .

Thank You

Just re done top of motor. Everything together and I start it steam dumps out of the exhaust. I believe a water hose is wrong from the radiator somewhere. Need to know how to run the hoses. 89 iroc camaro...

Steam from the exhaust means, unfortunately, that coolant is entering the cylinders, and very little running like that will destroy the rings and pistons. It could be anything from an intake or head gasket leak to a cracked cylinder.

M.A.F. sensor went bad os so i thought. disconnected it, car ran fine no problems. about a month later it starts acting up. since then there's a new fuel pump, filter, plugs, cap an rotor. as well as a new...

If the M.A.F. sensor is disconnected it can't help the driveability of the vehicle in question. Do you get a service engine soon light with a code to this effect? I would change it and hook it up and see what happens.

I have a 1987 Camaro Iroc Z28 5.0 engine. I'ts

Fuel pump is located in the fuel tank. A shop can do a fuel pressure pretty easy. You could do it to, you just have to spend 50 to buy a tester, or spend 20 to have a shop do it.

It won't stay running when put into gear

check for engine vacuum leaks and clean the throttle body and idle speed control air bypass valve, also have the system tested for stored trouble codes, below is how to do that test manually. go to the link.

'87 Iroc fuel port injection. Car won't start. Can't hear fuel pump running when ignition is turned on. Starter turns but engine will not start. Where is fuel pump located on gas tank?

The pump is in the tank. Empty the tank, disconnect the filler and vent tubes, and remove the straps that hold it under the car. Take the strap bolts off the rear end and the front should just slide out. Have a jack ready to help lower and roll out of the way.
