Does the code reader power up ? Is there battery voltage at pin #16 in the DLC ? Does no communication show on code reader ? Are any of the pins bent ? Post a pic !

Plug in an O.B.D.2 machine to the outlet under the dash on the driver's side, and see what codes come up. They will start with a letter P and 4 numbers. Put that code into Google and it will give you your problem. OBD2 stands for On Board Diagnostics.

It is usually carbon pieces from the evap carbon canister clogging the purge solenoid and purge flow sensor. There should still be a one piece purge solenoid and purge sensor with hose assembly available. You will also need to replace the carbon storage canister.
After replacement disconnect the negative battery cable, hold your foot on the brake pedal for 30 seconds, then reconnect the battery.

most of the time a blown cig. fuse will cause a no comunication reading .

Run and obd2 scan at autozone or advance. this is free. This will let you know if any sensors are bad and it will give you a course of action. It could be your input or output speed sensor or your ECM or TCM. Exhaust these options before pinpointin the transmission as the problem Its also possible when they replaced the gas tank they dislodged a ground connection. Good Luck

if your obd2 scanner fits the connection you have obd2, obd1 connector is way differnt.
