Can anyone tell me what code 0420 is off a obd scan? Can't get a soild answer. Think i may need a new catalatic converter but not sure. thanks.

That means Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

In other words you are polluting the air more than normal, this wont damage the car, but you will get in troubles if you have to go through an emission test.

It is a cat code that you will onlt be able to get rid of by replacing the cat. Good Luck

P0140 bank 1 sensor 2 1996 plymouth grand voyager minivan


Code 140 is for a problem with the O2 sensor bank one sensor two.
This sensor is behind the catalytic converter and tells the computer if the cat is working or not.
The code means the sensor voltage has not changed as often as it should.
Could be a faulty sensor, wiring harness problem, or other issue.
The sensor would need to be tested using a scanner.

I can answer the first question. The year of your car will run without the cataltic converters and not affect the performance or fuel milage. Your ECM is not that sophisticated. You can call a parts store and they can tell you where the ECM is located

How to clear OBD II trouble code P0422 for 2001 Kia Sportage


Take your car to an Automotive Parts Store. And they will clear the codes from the on board computers memory for you providing the necessary repairs have been made and don correctly. However the Catalatic Converter Needs to be replaced first or the computer will command the check engine light to come back on, even if the codes were to be cleared. Mazda 2000 MX-5 convertible, 85000 miles.-check engine light remains on. Have replace the crankcase sensor. stalling quit. Both catalatic converter sensors replaced. do I need to replace the CC now?


It depend on the code. there are a lot of things other than the O2 sensors. Have it scanned and bring the code back to this sight so we can tell what the problem is.

Most Advance and Autozone store will scan it for free.

Here is something from a reference guide that we follow at my shop, hope it helps.

When diagnosing a PCM code PO420, be sure to determine the cause of the converter failure. Converters are not likely to fail without an external cause. Typical causes are: fuel pressure regulator leak, engine misfire, dirty fuel injectors, coolant consumption, etc. Also, be aware that some converters on the market will cause this code or codes due to a lack of oxygen storage capacity. A component that must be in these converters, Cerium, is required to store, then slowly release oxygen.

OBD 1.5 OBD 1.5 refers to a partial implementation of OBD-II which General Motors used on some vehicles in 1994 and 1995 (GM did not use the term OBD 1.5 in the documentation for these vehicles - they simply have an OBD and an OBD-II section in the service manual.)
For example, the 94-95 Corvettes have one post-catalyst oxygen sensor (although they have two catalytic converters), and have a subset of the OBD-II codes implemented. For a 1994 Corvette the implemented OBD-II codes are P0116-P0118, P0131-P0135, P0151-P0155, P0158, P0160-P0161, P0171-P0175, P0420, P1114-P1115, P1133, P1153 and P1158.[1]
This hybrid system was present on the GM H-body cars in 94-95, W-body cars (Buick Regal, Chevrolet Lumina ('95 only), Chevrolet Monte Carlo ('95 only), Pontiac Grand Prix, Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme) in 94-95, L-body (Chevrolet Beretta/Corsica) in 94-95, Y-body (Chevrolet Corvette) in 94-95, on the F-body (Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird) in 95 and on the J-Body (Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire) and N-Body (Buick Skylark, Oldsmobile Achieva, Pontiac Grand Am) in 95.
Depending on the year and the vehicle, a car with the OBD 1.5 system may have either the older OBD-I connector, or the newer OBD-II connector, but they are electrically identical to each other.[citation needed]
The pinout for the ALDL connection on these cars is as follows:

For instance, on the Corvette there are interfaces for the Class 2 serial data stream from the PCM, the CCM diagnostic terminal, the radio data stream, the airbag system, the selective ride control system, the low tire pressure warning system and the passive keyless entry system.[2]
An OBD1.5 has also been used on Mitsubishi cars of '95 '97 vintage.
An OBD1.5 has been used in some 1995 Volkswagen VR6's (Juice Box's GTI)
