the truck will crank but it won't run with starting fluid more than a second. I went to get gas a mile down the road and when I got in to start it back up it woudln't start. I have been told it is the fuel pump, or the filter, but I have looked everywhere for the filter and cannot find it. I checked the fuel relay switch and that wasn;t the problem, so by process of elimination, I am going with the fuel pump.

  • gmiller208 May 17, 2009

the only noise we heard was the fuel relay switch. we stood by the fuel tank and listened for any noise and there was none

  • gmiller208 May 17, 2009

no i only put a couple dollars in it. so, would it ve easier to take the bed off of the truck or drop the tank?

  • gmiller208 May 17, 2009

well, i have had some people tell me it is easier to take off the bed it was easier. I have never tackeld this job before so I am looking for the easiest solution.

  • gmiller208 May 17, 2009

Then i hope you didn't fill it with gas, cause your pump is shot, and you're going to be taking the tank off.

No. Drop the tank. Just two straps.

Well to take the bed off, you've got all those rusty old muddy bolts, your tail lights, and your fuel filler spout, and you need three men and a boy to lift it off, and put it back on. The gas tank, you have 2 straps, and your filler spout.

Othe fuel filter is on the driver side behind or slightly infront of the rear wheel on the frame, looks like a silver can, only a tid smaller. There is another filter that is in-tank affized to the bottom of your fuel sending unit. Its a pain to do but there is worse. Why do you feel you need to change the fuel pump?

Then you likely need to rep[lace the fuel pump, check the pressure at the test port on the top of the engine. If the pump is the problem you must drop the fuel tank to access it. Also change the filter if a new pump is needed.

Trouble shoot S10 (2.5lt) 1987 no start fuel related

fuel relay(under hood black square, should click when ignition is turn on) fuel lines, fuel filter(under driverside back of door inside frame) or fuel pump on top of tank. I would disconnect the fuel filter on the backside to see if the pump is pumping fuel, if it is then I would hook it back up and remove the front hose on the filter, if fuel is coming through then I would disconnect the line at the engine and check for fuel, hope this helped Tim

1987 chevy r10 won't start

Assuming it is a fuel problem I checked at the carb. to be sure no gas was being pumped through the filter located under the power steering pump then the fuse on my 87 s10 was the ECM fuse.then check for the relay to click and the had to replace the oil pressure sending unit and mine started right up..the oil pressure must be about 4 lbs for the Pump tp operate...I loosened the fuel line to ck. for fuel but thats living dangerously...a pressure guage would be on the safe side......
