The theft module is in the bodu module. You can ohm the black pellet in the key. Buy a resistor from radio shack of the same resistance. Then at the base of the column find the two wire connector, it will be coated with an orange cover. Install the resistor in the harness side, and leave it unpluged from the column. Good Luck

Ok i have a 99 deville im familiar with the V.A.T.S problem these cars are having, well my car is doing the same thing . security light flashing, anti teft system problem on my dash, and for some reason...

Check out this site. Dont get a new ignition. You can bypass this yourself for much cheaper. As far as if he'll give you a new key or not, i dont know. There are 15 different possible vats keys. So the odds that yours will be compatable are 1 in 15. Not to mention that there are 3 parts in a vats system, The key, the lock cylinder, and the TDM. Just hope its not the TDM

Pass key fault is brinking car will start batt is good starter istoo

So the Security light is on or flashing in your vehicle and you are looking at 1 of 3 things. Either the vehicle won't crank over and start, It cranks but dies in a few seconds, or your vehicle shuts off while driving scaring the **** out of you. You have now experienced GM's worst security system ever created. GM's security, also known as Passlock Passkey or Vats.

There are 3 parts in this system:

1.The CHIPKEY
Normally a black resister chip in key which "communicates" to the lock cylinder. Sometimes is hidden in the plastic part of keys in new models. Same concept, might say PK1 PK2 PK3 PL or something similar to that. The newer ones work on frequency. Same thing tho.

2.The LOCK CYLINDER
Inside there are pins that read the chip in the key or the part that reads the frequency on new models. This then "communicates" to the TDM)

3.The TDM
Theft Deterrant Module-Sometimes called the "computer" or "brain". This is the part that sends the signal (**NOTE**) to your car and allows your car to start or continue running depending on your type of system.
If any of these parts are not communicating properly, your SECURITY light will come on and shut down your vehicle. The idea being, that without the chipped key or FOB key, the vehicle wont start and cant be "hotwired" or stolen. Pretty nice when working, but these systems are flawed and the average life is 6-10 years. Every single aspect of this system is expensive to replace and can only be worked on by "authorized" GM service men with out voiding warrenty. Most garages dont even touch them and if they do,
they will sell you every part they can before "fixing" the problem

*QUICK FIX TRICKS*
1st trick
Try a spare key that is newer or used less. The pins wear down with use and so do the keys causing the security to fail.

2nd trick
(if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my Buick for more than a year. Remember this is a temporary fix... If its shutting down while running, I'm sorry I have no quick fix...
*PERMINANT FIX*
Well since the lifespan of these systems are so short, and are extremely expensive to fix, and in my opinion far worse of a threat to owners than theives, my only perminant suggestion is to eliminate it completely. After a year of 10 minute tricks and a "key bypass" that lasted 2 months. I have only one good suggestion. After surfing the web for hours thru forums and websites i came across http://newrockies.com/passkey to the starter or injectors and so on. Thus eliminating the ENTIRE system COMPLETELY. I came upon a fork in my road. A TDM for $600 in my $1000 car or the $200 bypass. Or throw my car away. Lets say i now drive a Buick with the chip ripped out of the key and the TDM sitting in my glovebox for show
and tell. If you have any questions or anything else. Comment on this post
and i'll get an E-mail to reply to you. If you do choose to buy the bypass,
i have pictures of what a TDM looks like and will definately help you when
installing the newrockies bypass. Good luck

When this happens, check to see if the security light is illuminated on the dash. It sounds like your vats anti theft is failing. Here is some info on that.

I have a 1994 buick regal custom wit 6 cyclinder 3.8L eng and it wont start worked good one day next day just wouldnt start. so i replaced the starter, and the battery, but still nothing can u help?

So the Security light is on or flashing in your vehicle and you are looking at 1 of 3 things. Either the vehicle won't crank over and start, It cranks but dies in a few seconds, or your vehicle shuts off while driving scaring the **** out of you. You have now experienced GM's worst security system ever created. GM's security, also known as Passlock Passkey or Vats.

There are 3 parts in this system.
Most garages dont even touch them and if they do,
they will sell you every part they can before "fixing" the problem/
*QUICK FIX TRICKS*
1st trick
Try a spare key that is newer or used less. The pins wear down with use and so do the keys causing the security to fail.

2nd trick
(if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my Buick for more than a year.

After a year of 10 minute tricks and a "key bypass" that lasted 2 months and stranded me out of state, ($375 tow charge) i have only one good suggestion.
Good luck

I can not turn my car all the way off just partial engine off. The security light is on. I tried washing the key like it said to do and that doesn't work.

Here is some info on the security light, The key not turning back part is a seperate issue. Maybe your ignition cylinder broke or the pins that read your key are jamming it. Try turning it back with the key out. Or try turning it back with the car in nuetral. Remember to set parking break in nuetral.

So the Security light is on or flashing in your vehicle and you are looking at 1 of 3 things. Either the vehicle won't crank over and start, It cranks but dies in a few seconds, or your vehicle shuts off while driving scaring the **** out of you. So far we take the key out of the ignition, clean it off and wait 3 minutes. We can go somewhere, shut off the car again and we will have to do this all over. It is getting to be a pain. It doesn't...

The problem is the VATs security system, Sometimes the key goes out (little black chip in key). Sometimes the actual TDM (computer) goes, and thats an expensive problem.

Cheap fix:
Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective. Until the TDM (theft deterrent module) in the dash poops out, then you're kinda screwed. I was told that these types of key security systems have a 7-10 year life span. Sucks for us. This link explains the "Key Issue" pretty well. Theres alot of sights out there that explain it.
----- http://vats.likeabigdog.com/

Never worry again fix:
Bypass the whole VATS/Passlock/passkey I or passkey II system entirely. Literally take it out, and throw it away. I just did this in my Regal. Took about an hour. Took longer to find the thing than it did to fix the problem. For a list of cars effected by this problem. See the NEWROCKIES link on the right side of their page......... They sell a unit for 200 bucks to totally bypass this system FOREVER. life time-money back and all that. Finally did this in my car. Well worth the 200 if you've looked into getting this replaced... Anywhere from 600-1000 bucks.

----- With this fix, you can take that whole Vats, passlock, passkey **** system out of your car all together. Good info on both sites

I've having the same problem on my 2000 alero but my security light isn't flashing on and off. Its just stayin on. Any suggestions?

The problem might be your Vats security system. This causes the car to either "not start" or "shut down" while running, or start for 5 seconds and then die. (depending on the system) If the security light flashes, i guarantee that this is what the problem is. 1st trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year. If its shuting down while running, im sorry i have no quick fix...
