I haven't drove the car at all since I put the new battery in. I checked for power draws with the negative terminal and disconnected the alternator and still drew 12.74 volts

  • olde_cars May 17, 2009

Is the rectifier not in the alternator ? I disconnected the alternator completely and it still has the draw.

Looks like the dynamo or the rectifier has malfunctioned. However if your headlight do not get dimmer the longer you drive at night(couple of hours min,), then the dynamo is OK but the rectifier responsible for charging the battery has somehow shorted, resulting your power windows operating with the key in off position.............sodeep

OK but that has no connection to failure of an electronic item which generally not used regularly is more prone to failure, because the insulation the cables become stiff & brittle, sulfur deposits on copper based connectors and many more factors( and might seem like something like " list 10 things that can go wrong on any unused electronic item"). No puns intended, just expressing my helplessness to put down all the reasons so please don't mind my language.......................sodeep( and remember the rectifier is the main culprit)

Well for charging a 12 Voltery requires current which is routed via rectifier when the current(I) consumption is low(eg. during daylight when not using head lights/Fog lights, etc.and as far as i know Sulfation occurs when a battery is not fully charged, and the longer it
remains in a discharged state the harder it is to overcome the
sulfation. This may be overcome with slow, low-current (trickle)
charging. Sulfation is due to formation of large, non-conductive lead
sulfate crystals on the plates; lead sulfate formation is part of each
cycle, but in the discharged condition the crystals become large and
block passage of current through the electrolyte.

Key in ignition stucked

battery died somehow in two days - More then likely your vehicle has what is call a parasitic drain on the electrical system (battery) . Something is not turning off when it is suppose to . The key will not come out because of lack of battery power . Safety system-won't let the key be turned all the way off an removed again because of no power . You have to get it jump started an get it off the street . Then check out vides on youtube on find parasitic draw .

New battery In mercedes no power

I'm not a car mechanic, but, it sounds like you might want to check the fuse to the ignition switch, and, if that fails, it might be a problem with the Start Safety Switch on the transmission. Good luck.

1997 jetta will not start. the battery has been disconnected and charged. Is it true that when the power has been disconnected that there are some security steps to go through before the car can be...

all vw MUST be reset after battery dies/changed.put key in door,unlock/hold key over 30 secs(windows go down)then lock/hold key over 30 secs(windows go up/sunroof closes)then press unlock button on remote for 30 secs......RESET DONE......(try this for fun....sit in car after turning off engine/remove key, drivers door keypad is still live(until you open door)ALSO when engine is running lower any window and then raise up with fingers in top of door, the window will rollback.(if you do it once it hurts..twice it really hurts..three times it traps your hand in.)ALL THIS is NOT in the handbook.......

Door locks and power window

Just did this procedure I got from forums:

"any type of power/voltage change seems to trigger this issue

The most common symptom is power locks fail and only the driver window quits, however that is on the extended cab.

Steps to fix and it works every time.

take door panel off driver's door
Disconnect the wiring attached to window and power lock control unit
disconnect battery cables
connect the negative to the positive cable(((NO BATTERY CONNECTED)))
This will act to short residual voltage in the system

5 minutes later
place the key in the ignition and turn to the run position
connect the wiring to the window/lock controller
connect the negative cable to the battery
then the positive
open drivers side door
turn key to the off position((do not remove yet)) you should get a series of dings through speakers telling you the key is still in the ignition
once it begins dinging pull the key out and you should hear the door lock solenoids trigger and the windows should work." - forums
