Question about 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

1 Answer

Fuel system My 2001 suburban 1500 died today at a stop light. After checking it over it appears the fuel pump may be out. I checked all the electrical fuses and relays and they were good. Also, i tried to listen for the "whirring" noise when you first go to start the vehicle but i can't here it. I pulled off the inline filter and with it off tried to see if it would expel gas when i turned the key on but nothing. I figure the pump has gone bad but want to hear of any other ideas before i drop the tank and replace it because its expensive. I can't find anything that indicates there is a safety shutoff switch for this model that needs to be reset. Your input would be appreciated.

The relay was only 15 bucks so i replaced it right off the bat.

Unless there is something else with the relay i should check out, not sure.

  • enatebrown May 17, 2009

Should there be 12v when the key is in the "ON" position?  Also, im not sure what the best way to apply a 12v charge to the fuel pump if i can access it without dropping the tank.

I checked the relay and it reads 12v.

BTW thanks for your time and input.

OK ! before replacing the fuel pump , check for the FUEL PUMP RELAY , usually located under hood where the MAIN fuses are , youre gonna need a multimeter to check for voltage where the RELAY sits , hope this helps , good luck AJ

ok , check for 12 v where the FUEL RELAY sits , and another suggestion is to disconnect the FUEL PUMP (theres a connector somewhere near the TANK ) and apply 12v directly to the connector of the fuel pump , see if it makes the whirring sound , if not , then need to replace it , let me know , AJ

Yes, there is a Fuel Pump Relay. The Relay is located on the firewall just above the left-hand (even cyclinders) valve cover as viewed from the front of the car. There is also fuel pump test lead attached to the harness at the fuel pump relay. Attach a power wire from the battery to the lead and the fuel pump should come on. If fuel pump comes on, the relay could be bad. Also check the fuel filter located under the passenger side of the truck tucked into the frame rail.

2001 chev suburban 5.3 gas, engine dies after you start it up. It acts like it is starving on fuel. Could it be fuel pump, fuel filter or what?

try reving it after you start, if it still chokes or sputters your right. if not check your battery guage. i'd try changing your filter first because its the cheapest option. you might want to consider flushing lines too. worse case you'll need a fuel pump sending unit.

No. It is either a fuel or ignition problem. Check for spark, and then fuel. Your filter could be plugged, or fuel pump may have given out. I assume it's fule injected? You should be able to hear the pump cut in for a couple of seconds. If it's carburated , just take the breather off, and pump the gas a couple of times. You should see gas squirting in the carb.
If there's no spark, check wires, distributor, etc.

Suburban dies at highway speed

It sounds like a fuel pump getting weak and hot. First check the ground wire at the fuel pump pigtail. and replace the fuel fiter.

Engine dies at highway cruising speeds

have fuel pump pressure checked 50-60 Psi at idle 60PSI with vac line diconnected from pressure regulator. If that checks out check for ingation switch failier may be keeps car power on but telling ecm that it has been turned from run. Also have a wave form done on fuel pump as it can still have good pressure but not be fully funtional elctricly. if you have acsses to a tech 2 have it checked for codes as it may not have turned on the light but may have stored a code
