Question about 2001 Oldsmobile Alero
First of all I hope you are aware of the following info:
2001 OLDSMOBILE ALERO -- By letter dated August 27,2003, GM notified the Agency that it is conducting a voluntary safetyrecall (NHTSA recall no. 03V327) involving certain model year (MY)2000-2001 Chevrolet Malibu, Oldsmobile Alero, and Pontiac Grand Am.GM'srecall covers 670,740 vehicles manufactured beginning February 1, 2000through May 1, 2001 (Alero and Grand Am) and February 1, 2000 throughMay 31, 2001 (Malibu).GM reports that turn signal failure is due tosolder joint cracking in the hazard switch, and has identified rapidtemperature transitions of the hazard switch and the soldering processas the cause of cracking.electrical current to the turn signals flowsthrough the hazard switch and an open circuit in the hazard switch willcause the exterior turn/hazard lamps to become intermittent orinoperative.GM will replace the hazard switch on all involvedvehicles.based on GM's safety recall action, this investigation isclosed. Investigation was initiated on December 23 2002. Closed onSeptember 05 2003. For detailed information & supporting documents, see the official NHTSA page concerning investigation #EA02037 »
Also " CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES HAVE HAZARD WARNINGSWITCHES THAT MAY EXPERIENCE SOLDER JOINT CRACKING CAUSED BY RAPIDTEMPERATURE TRANSITIONS AND THE SOLDERING PROCESS. IF SOLDER JOINTCRACKING OCCURS AND RESULTS IN AN OPEN CIRCUIT, THE TURN SIGNALS/HAZARDLAMPS BECOME INTERMITTENT OR INOPERATIVE."
Another inherent defect is "
2001 OLDSMOBILE ALERO -- Vehicle description: Certainpassenger vehicles equipped with manual transaxles (RPO M86) fail tocomply with the requirements of FMVSS no. 114, "Theft Protection." Whena driver attempts to shift from 5th gear to reverse, a shift inhibitorcauses the transmission to be mechanically in 4th gear even though theshift lever indicates reverse gear.
In this situation, the keycan be removed from the ignition while the transmission is in a forwardgear, which is not permitted by the standard."
In your case the safety features including locking of door properly, AM reception gone, and fog lights not working indicates total failure of the electric signals coming in from the sensors(which is also incorrect) have somewhere shorted with the main supply from the battery causing this odd behavior.
I would advice you to get in touch with the Oldsmobile Aero indicating manufacturing date for them to first correct the above issues free of cost. Best thing after that is to get the entire electrical wiring revamped, all the sensors checked by a computer and get all the codes/warnings/indications reset by the same computer and oonly after successful completion and testing, should you pay for the repairs................sodeep

best bet here is that the wiring may be the issue, not the relay, the fuse or the solenoid, well maybe including all.
do you have a ground checker, the a pair of tools where you put one on one end of the circuit and one on the other end to check if the line is working. this is the best way for you to isolate the problem, ill be glad to look for a wiring diagram for you to refer to.
hope this helps,
