Riding rough, flashing drive light, takes 4k RPM's to get going

Hi, About 3 or 4 months ago my check engine light came on. My husband is a mechanic so he checked it for me. It said it was my gas cap. The check engine light has still been on but no problems. Within the last week I have begun to have major problems. While driving the car will basically kick out of gear and it will take up to 4000 RPM's to get it going. Also, the gears show up as digital near my where my mileage shows up and the drive light will flash with a line across it (as in No Drive). I have to pull over, put it in park and then back into drive. I took it back to my husband who ran the check again, this time it said it had multiple random misfires and there was a problem with the throttle position sensor. His boss basically said that I need a new throttle body because the sensors aren't sold separately for this car. We put that in and my husband just took it out for a drive. The car is continuing to have problems. Is there anything you can tell me that could help?

If anyone has this same problem, let it be known that it is now fixed. We found out it was the transmission range sensor that needs to be replaced. Costs about 45 bucks through the dealer and my husband is a mechanic so the labor was free. Now it's all fixed !

SOURCE: Rough/Hesitating Acceloration

Hi,

Yes it does sound like a fueling issue, but could also be vacuum sensor or airflow sensor.

If you haven't replaced the fuel filter in 3 years, then it may be about time you did. It is also one of the least expencive parts, and even a DIY job if access is possible, but you have to depressurise the fuel line before changing.

You can test the output of the fuel pump through the filter with a little care and a short length of pipe into a fuel can. It can as you say be a faulty fuel pump - but you will only know by testing it.

SOURCE: TRANSMISSION PULLS VERY VERY SLOW IN DRIVE AND ONLY WHEN I ACCELERATE HEAVILY. REVERSE WORKS FINE.

is this car still under warranty? if so take it back to the dealer and don't accept it as repaired till you drive it. sounds like the logic that controls the transmission is flipping out, sometimes they will tell you that it needs a reflash. what this amounts to is that the manufacturer put some not so great programming in the logic when they built the car but now they have a patch or fix that makes it work better but you have to pay them for their time to install the fix. ask them what they will charge you for the privilege and decide if it's worth it to you. there is a recorded technical service bulletin about harsh shifts for your car. well, actually there are two, the latest one a revision of the first. i would try to make this their problem, it really is. hope this helps.

SOURCE: Issue after replacing the Transmission Range Sensor

I've talked to three different Suzuki Dealerships since mine just went out as well, and they have all told me that they have to reprogram the computer or it wouldn't be able to shift into the correct gear.

Dont drive a car with the light flashing. A flashing check engine light means that something is really wrong and you can damage the engine if you drive it.

this sounds similar to a problem i had. as the rpm went over 2000 the engine would stop for a split second and then kick back in.
after a few days looking my garage finally found the problem was a faulty air mass meter.
this cost me £200 in total to be repaired.

I own an '01 S-Type and have had to many problems to list, however 3 months ago mine started riding rough, the check engine light actually started blinking and it shook pretty bad especially at stop lights (although it didn't shut off) I drove it straight to the shop and they said it was a bad ignition coil (coil #4) - $135 total and it ran fine. 2 months later coil #5 went. I was advised that if you take it to the dealer they will replace all 6 ignition coils at once charging you over $1,000. They are only about $60 a part stores. Good Luck I'm getting rid of my Jag this week! What a pain in the neck beauty!
