Question about 1986 Porsche 911

Oil level was too high/burning oil now

I changed my oil today...drove 1/2 mile and stopped after I saw it was burning oil. I drained to the correct level. Now it starts with a little blue smoke, then is clear for about 1-2 minutes, then it starts burning oil again. What can I do to get the oil burning to stop? Gerry/1986 911

That is not correct.
You need to drive the car untill the oil burns out from your muffler.Don`t try it in the garage -need`s to be driven.
No repairs needed.
Make sure you check your oil level only in idle and warm engine.
always leave about 5mm before the top mark in case of overheating.

My 2008 chevy avalanche is burning 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles

How many miles on your vehicle ? Do you see any leak spots on the ground from the truck ? Blue exhaust , oil burning , valve guide seals , piston rings , PCV clogged .

Oil Consumption Diagnosis
Checks
Causes
Excessive oil consumption, not due to leaks, is the use of 1 L (1 qt) or more of engine oil within 3 200 kilometers (2,000 miles).
Preliminary
The causes of excessive oil consumption may include the following conditions:
• External oil leaks
Refer to Oil Leak Diagnosis .
• Incorrect oil level or improper reading of the oil level indicator
With the vehicle on a level surface, run the engine for a few minutes, allow adequate drain down time, 2-3 minutes, and measure for the correct engine oil level.
• Improper oil viscosity
Refer to the vehicle owners manual and use the recommended SAE grade and viscosity for the prevailing temperatures.
• Continuous high speed driving and/or severe usage
• Crankcase ventilation system restrictions or malfunctioning components
Refer to Crankcase Ventilation System Inspection/Diagnosis .
• Worn valve guides and/or valve stems
• Worn or improperly installed valve stem oil seals
Refer to Spark Plug Inspection .
• Piston rings broken, worn, or not seated properly
Allow adequate time for the rings to seat.
Replace worn piston rings, as necessary.
Refer to Cylinder Leakage Test .
• Piston and rings improperly installed or not fitted to the cylinder bore
Refer to Lower Engine Noise, Regardless of Engine Speed

Oil level shows about 1.5 qts high oil changed 6

If you added oil level before engine was warm
Then when engine is warm you recheck the level
Oil Expands with heat
let it cool down and then re-check if its too much drain a touch off.

possible too much oil, drain all the oil out and put the correct amount back in and since you have the oil drained go ahead and change the oil filter.

Oil Change two weeks ago and oil level is low already???

I assume you have no leaks as you say. Your van does hold 5 quarts of 10w30 oil with filter change. The level was 1/4" above the add mark, which is less than 1 quart low. You drove the van 1,300 miles so it is very possible that it could burn that much oil in that many miles without you seeing much smoke. Top it off and have someone else drive it. Have them get up to around 60 mph, then let off the accelerator and let it coast down to 30 mph, then accelerate fully while you follow in another vehicle. If your van is burning oil you will see a big puff of blue smoke when they accelerate after coasting. If you do not I would suspect you were cheated out of about 1/2 quart of oil. You would not be the first person this has happened to. Top it off and check as I described and then check the level after driving another 1,300 miles. If it is still full find another place to change your oil as the place you went are crooks.

Oil light goes on...had a dry stick 4 1/2 qts put in. no oil on ground. after oil change light went on at 70 miles.. on 15 secs then off for 5 miles then on again 15 secs--- off 4 miles--off 3 miles- off 2...

if it's not going onto the ground, and it's not being burned, check the positive crankcase ventilation and the exhaust gas recirculation valves for oil seepage...also check your air filter, if its got oil on it replace the pcv valve.

1993 w/rebuilt tranny wont go into 3rd.Just bought.

So it shifts from 1st to 2nd but that is it? 3/4 clutch burned out. Check the transfer case level. If you remove the fill plug and oil pours out, the transfer case input seal is bad, the transmission oil drained back into the transfer case leaving the transmission oil level low, and then it burns out the 3/4 clutch pack. I have seen oodles of these at my shop. Very common. Someone may have added fluid to the transmission to "doctor" the problem which won't work anyway

High oil Consumption, BMW M5

Look for Castrol TWS 10W60 Motor Oil. This car should not burn so much oil, you need to use a different kind. It is recommended by BMW as well. I also heard the VANOS isnt an issue anymore, can be fixed with a different MAFF. Good luck!

Oil sensor

The oil you took out was probably a lighter weight. A heavier oil will show a higher oil pressure. Make sure you are using the proper weight for the temperature conditions in your part of the country.
