Question about 2000 Daewoo Lanos

1 Answer

Timing belt failed. All valves appear to be bent.

I am still testing and have not removed the cyl head yet. Testing cyls one by one with air, and valves closed, I get air through the intake and exhaust manifolds as if all valves are bent. Is it common for this to happen to every valve? I'm also trying to figure out what an "interferance engine" is, and if mine is one of them. I understand one of the advantages of the term means an engine that does not bend valves when the belt fails.

Hello jjenkins_jcf: My name is Roger and I can help with your problem. The answer to whether or not your engine is a interference engine is yes it is. This means if the camshaft stops and the crankshaft turns. The pistons will touch the head of the valves. This will be severe internal engine damage. I have one in shop right now that this happened to bent all but 5 valves. The easy way to see what happened is to take the valve cover off and you can see the damage. All valves should be up against the camshaft. You will see most of them do not come close to the camshaft. There is no cheap fix. Sorry to tell you this. Please rate the answer as this is how we know you received the right information. Thank You for using FixYa. Roger

Bent valves cyl 4 & 6 on a 94 isuzu rodeo v6, do i need to pull the engine inorder to repair?

One way or another you have to get the head off to replace the valves. You may have cracked the head by the valves being bent.

I fitted a timing belt to a 02 fiat punto and adjusted the marks on the crank and cam inline with the spec in the manual the car wont start and is backfiring through the carb any ideas

Good evening, I'm sorry to hear you're having problems however it is nothing that cannor be recovered from. You either have your timing 180 degrees off or your marks moved. A good hint is when you finish your installation give the belt a few rotations until your marks line up again that way you know everything is good. I hope this helps, and if you have anymore questions please feel free to ask.

Timing belt snapped

hi from uk the cambelt timing marks for accent 1.3/1.5 petrol are as follows= the cam cog has a hole drilling between the outer toothed and the central securing bolt this hole at TDC number 1 cyl is at top central and lines up with a V cut in the cyl head at rear of cog ? the crank cog at TDC number 1 cyl is a pop mark on both the cog and on thefront face of engine quite noticable ! these line up and are at approx 12 -30 pm when viewed fit new belt from crankcog in anticlockwise ie crank then cam then tensioner HOWEVER! if you are considering just replacing belt and tensioner ? be warned this engine is an interferance engine that is to say if belt fails whilst driving there may/will most probably be damage to the valves (bent) due to contact with pistons so would advise caution and suggest compression test all cyls after fitting new belt and tensioner and before rebuild completely once valves have bent they will not contact pistons again but you will have serious missfire/s and probably back fire up inlet manifold coupled with failing to start if engine is high milage ? consider removal of cyl head and check? de coke and replace damaged or best all valves then engine will have improved performance and more milesin future hope this helps

Timing belt went out on 1999 hyundai elantra

hi from uk the elantra engine is an interferance engine that means that should the cambelt fail whilst engine running there is most likely the valves will come into contact with pistons result will be bent valves whichmeans cyl head off and new valves/head gasket/ timing belt and tensioner consider this ? if your engine has high milage but ran ok prior to this failure ? it will be worth repairs as above however best to remove cyl head and inspect damage 1st ? if only damage to valves usually 3 or 4 renew them all and reseat new h/gasket etc you will get good result so all depends on investigation of damage ?

1993 ford ranger timing belt broke no warning hadn't been acting up just died..do you think the valves are okay and not bent

Put new belt on and try to start, If runs rough afterward run compression test to determine which cylinders have bent valves.

Broken timing belt. engine turns over and put a wrench on cam shafts and they turn over pretty good

have someone perform a leak down test on each cylinder. This will tell you if you possibly bent a valve on any of the cylinders. If you did you need to remove the cyl. head to have it looked at. If the leak down test is good on all cylinders you should be good with just replacing the timing belt and tensioner. The likely hood that you didn't bend a valve is slim since that motor is an interference motor.

I purchesed a 2003 engine 3.0fwd online I had it installed the machanic did not change the timeing belt. will this distroy the upper cylinder heads and cause the engine not to start

if the engine jumps time (most likely at start up) it will bend several valves in cyl head. when this happens the engine will not start or run. the effected cyl head or heads need to be removed and reconditioned or replaced. cyl heads probebly ok but valves will be bent.

Timing belt broke changed it engine is missing. could it be

The easiest way to test this is to carry out a compression test. This test will determine if any valves are bent. The test is very easy to carry out. 1.obtain a compression tester. 2. remove all spark plugs. 3. screw tester into spark plug hole. 4. with your foot on the accelarator, crank engine. 5. read the tester reading and write it down. eg. cyl 1 175psi cyl.2 170psi etc. if you have a bent valve one cylinder will be very low compared to the rest.
