Question about 1999 Honda Civic

Car overheats when when not moving

The radiator cooling fan checks good. The relay checks ok, but not being activated to deliver voltage to the fan. Need some help what triggers the relay to power up the fan, better yet the solution to this problem.
Appreciate your help guys.

Sounds like you need a new thermastat. Relatively cheep and easy to intsall. Thermastat triggers your cooling fan relay.

Cooling Fan Control 2.0L
The engine cooling fan is a variable speed fan. The engine control module (ECM) controls the fan speed by sending a pulse width modulated (PWM) signal to the cooling fan control module. The cooling fan control module varies the voltage drop across the engine cooling fan motor in relation to the PWM signal. The cooling fan speed can be adjusted from 10 percent to 94 percent duty cycle. 94 percent is considered high speed fan.
Cooling Fan Control 2.2L or 2.4L
The engine cooling fan system consists of one cooling fan and one relay. Voltage is supplied to the relay through a fuse. The engine control module (ECM) controls the fan operation by grounding the cool fan relay control circuit. When the cool fan relay is energized, voltage is delivered to the cooling fan motor. The cooling fan motor is grounded through its own ground circuit.
When the request for fan activation is withdrawn, the fan may not turn OFF until the ignition switch is moved to the OFF position or the vehicle speed exceeds approximately 10 mph. This is to prevent the fan from cycling ON and OFF excessively at idle.


Just one speaker doesn't work ? Do you know how to do automotive electrical testing ? That's how to find both your problems . Speakes work by electrical inpluse's . The A/C radiator ( condenser ) fan also works by B+ voltage through a fuse an a relay , controlled by the engine electronic control module or PCM - powertrain control module . When you push the A/C turn on button , it sends a signal to the PCM . The PCM will then energize the radiator fan relay turning on the fan . Check fuse in the under hood fuse box , If the fuse is blown you have a electrical short , too much current flow . Plus if the PCM sees too much pressure in the A/C system it will not let the A/C work .

must we decode that to a symptom,. kinda hard right.

I will not guess. what is wrong, nor what is not working on your car. now what fans you are talking about, up to 4 fans on cars.

cab blower fan (wild guess blower is ok) and so is HVAC, ?
radiator fans
Condenser fan.

my wild guess to , engine over heats?????????
if yes, the scan it first. no not last FIRST.

gee the PCM knows water temp why have a fan temp regulator.
hark , now it dont. (saves cash on useless parts)
but has a relay , (well until you have my car and the relay is now 100% electronic, called a huge transistor)
we've used this tech in industry for years, but car makers just learning how still.
i digress. but evolution and history helps diagnosis.

"The engine cooling fan system consists of 2 electrical cooling fans and 3 fan relays. The relays are arranged in a series/parallel configuration that allows the engine control module (ECM) to operate both fans together at low or high speeds. The cooling fans receive positive voltage from the cooling fan relays which receive battery positive voltage from the underhood fuse block.
During low speed operation, the ECM supplies the ground path for the low speed cooling fan relay which is fan 1 relay through the low speed cooling fan relay control circuit. This energizes the low speed fan relay coil, closes the relay contacts, and supplies battery positive voltage from the fan 1 fuse through the cooling fan motor supply voltage circuit to the left cooling fan. This energizes the series/parallel relay coil, closes the relay contacts, and provides a ground path for the left cooling fan. At the same time the high speed fan relay coil is energized closing the relay contacts and provides battery positive voltage from the fan 2 fuse 1 on the cooling fan motor supply voltage circuit to the right cooling fan. During high speed fan operation, both engine cooling fans have their own ground path. The result is a parallel circuit with both fans running at high speed.
When the request for fan activation is withdrawn, the fan may not turn OFF until the ignition switch is moved to the OFF position or the vehicle speed exceeds approximately 16 km/h (10 mph). This is to prevent a fan from cycling ON and OFF excessively at idle.

is the ECT showing overheat, yes no?
if yes, it must operate a fan or 2.
the book even covers all tests for fans dead, in a large truth table.
both the FSM and alldata.com have that, its no secret ,its published in 4 major places.

lets back up
if the engine coolant is low (no that side tank the engine and rad)
the ECT will lie. if that happens the fans may not come one
that is because the ECT is useless measuring air, for water.
that water must touch ECT for ECT to work.
this is FIRST
then scan the ECT does it show overheating, IT must if it IS overheating. fix that next if it lies to you,(IR gun in hand)

The system has staged fans.
i cant find the trip points in my crappyy online pages.
but is like 225f then 250f trips. is my guess...
about. if the engine over heats, check fuses first then scan it.
it will simply tell you why its bad.
eg, fan1 output dead.
or if you hot wire a fan and its dead, then it is.
(only on cars with non modulated fans,,hot wire them,else not.)

this is how it really works
the ECU has software that decide trip points for fans.
hard coded, this is. based on how hot it is and if A/C is on not.
its way smarter than 1988 and better.
the DTC errors can see an open line, shorted to ground or stuck 12v.(runs all time error)
(tells you relay is good or not)

I have a 98 jeep grand Cherokee limited ONLY when i run the a/c it overheats replaced the water pump,thermostat,upper and lower hose,there no leaks anywhere only has a mechanical fan how do I fix


By any chance, does the electric cooling fan shut off when you turn the AC on? If so, either the wiring to the fan assembly has been compromised, or the cooling fan relay is bad.

When testing a cooling fan switch, first test it with the engine cold, then test it when the engine reaches a specified temperature. Check your vehicle's service manual for more directions.
To check a switch, disconnect the connector at the switch. with an ohmmeter, check for continuity between the terminals of the switch with the switch moved to the on position and to the off position.

The continuity through a switch can be checked with an ohmmeter. With the switch open, there should be infinite resistance. With the switch closed, there should be zero resistance. With the switch off, there should be no continuity between the terminals. With the switch on, there should be good continuity between the terminals. If the switch is activated by something mechanical and doesn't complete the circuit when it should, check the adjustment of the switch. (Some switches are not adjustable.) If the adjustment is correct, replace the switch. Another way to check a switch is to simply bypass it with a jumper wire. If the component works when the switch is jumped, a bad switch is indicated.
Voltage drop across switches should also be checked. Ideally, when the switch is closed there should be no voltage drop. Any voltage drop indicates resistance and the switch should be replaced.

Hi,
The problem would be the radiator cooling fan.
  • Check first the relay, interchange that relay from similar one in the fuse box in the engine compartment.
  • Check the radiator fan motor, pull down the fan motor and directly connect it to the battery.
  • Check the cooling fan thermo switch, it is located underneath/side of the radiator assembly. To check it, just get a paper clip and short the socket connector, fan should run if not the relay has a problem or the fan motor is already malfunctioning.

Sounds like your cooling fans on the radiator are not working. The fans are activated by a thermol switch on the engine or radiator reading the coolant temperature and an A/C switch. When the coolant is too hot the fans should activate cooling the system down. And, when the A/C is on the fans should also activate in order to cool the condensate so the A/C would work.

When you are driving, the movement of the vehicle throught he air is providing enough air flow to keep things cool and functional.

I would check the radiator fan fuse or fuses first. If those are OK I would try to run the fans with 12 volts and a ground that I supply just to see if the fan motor(s) actually run when powered. If the fan don't run when powered then the fans are bad and will need to be replaced. If the fans do run when you power them manually, then something is not allowing the power to activate, like a relay, control unit, or wiring.

It will take a little diagnostics, but it is not too difficult to chase it down.

Within five minutes, it starts to redline overheat, if you drive 2000rpm, it goes down, but goes back up when you idle


it could be a stuck thermostat, or a plugged radiator or cooling system, check to be sure cooling fans come on when they should or it will overheat. when moving it is air cooled through radiator. thats why it over heats at a stand still. check fans first, it could be a fuse relay or the coolant tempurature if fans do not work or coolant sensor not turning on coolant fans at the proper tempurature.

Sounds like a case of a bad radiator elec. cooling fan motor, fan should come on with a/c on, if it don't, check fuses, if fuse ok, check for voltage at cooling fan motor, if you do have voltage, replace elec. cooling fan motor.

Car will overheat while at idle


yes the head gaskets leaking on modern aluminum head engines is all to common. never overheat them, if they start to get hot shut it down and find out why, it can of course be the fans and plugged radiators or faulty thermostats but sounds like in your case the head gasket is leaking and combustion gas is entering the cooling system and this causes an overheat

Check the operation of the radiator cooling fan circuit:-
1) check fan control temperature sensor is ok,
2) check/replace the cooling fan control relay,
3) check supply fuse for cooling fan is ok.
