Question about 2005 Dodge Durango

1 Answer

Vechile is overheating I believe the thermostat is stuck close

Do you know how to unstick a thermostat on a 2005 dodge durango? My wife can't drive more than a few blocks after sittting 20-30 min before it heats right back up again. A speedy answer would be great! She's in the vechile now with my 3 kids. Thanks for any help on this.
Also is it getting stuck mean it needs replaced or what caused it to get stuck in the first place?

wow ty for the quick repsonse, what's the best way she can get it back home? She has to go like 10 miles or so to get it back home and she has to stop every like few blocks or maybe she can go a mile at a time than has to stop for like 25-30 min. how far can she go without it causeing damage to the headers or to the the engine etc? Or best to just get it towed?

Is the thermostat the same thing as the radiator cap? or is the thermostat located on the engine block somewhere? cause my wifes say's she thinks I'm thinking of a different thermostat than her? I wasn't aware a vechicle had more than 1 thermostat? Do you know what the location of it is on a 05 durango? sorry for the questions I think I should become more mechanically inclined lol

I just read up on it yeah I was thinking the same as you my wife had me confused lol The engine light came on yesterday so I checked all fluid levels all were good but the reseivor was low so we filled it. I hope that was a good thing considering this happend today. It didn't get hot yesterday so it must have got completely stuck today. She made it to the club her parents go to and is sitting there now letting it cool down really good. Hopefully someone there cvan help her. Thank you for all your great info

Hi, there isnt really a way to unstick it. The thermostat has a wax pellet that expands when it is operating causing the spring inside to open the thermostat letting the coolant flow properly. All you can really do just replace the thermostat, its a simple job as well

your best bet is the drive, let it cool, drive let it cool etc. Unless its worth it to you to just get it towed.
If she decides to do the stop and go, tell her to keep the hood open to let the engine cool faster.
If she drives with it overheating the coolant will boil and can damage the cylinder head and more. hope this helps

She can drive it once it cools down until the temp gauge on the dash is before the overheating mark.

its okay, no the rad cap isnt the same as the thermostat. As far as i know on a 2004
Dodge Durango has its thermostat located on the bottom radiator hose. A
close inspection of the bottom hose where it connects to the engine
will show you the thermostat housing. However this may differ for a 2005 + up models. There is sufficient amount of coolant in the resevoir?

If you are loosing water try a new radiator cap. The thermostat is the next big culprit. They often clog and stick closed. Next is clean out and flush the engine and radiator - do this anyway.

2000 Dodge Durango getting over heated

Never use a used radiator... check electric cooling fan, and air must be purged out of the radiator / cooling system after refilling it, this can be a little difficult. are you sure that it is not leaking coolant from somewhere else, which would cause the overheating.?

Have you checked the temperature sending unit? It reads the temp of your engine and sends the information to the engine to open or close thermostat. If it is not functioning properly it may not be having the thermostat open. Leading to overheating. I hope I could be of some help to you.

2005 dodge caravan need to know symptoms for faulty thermostat

There are two primary symptoms of a faulty thermostat (assuming you mean the coolant thermostat in the engine not the A/C Heater Thermostat).  The thermostat can fail in basically two ways:
1)  Stuck open - Engine runs colder, heater takes forever to heat up. 2)  Stuck closed - Engine runs very hot, then will suddenly drop in temperature, then run very hot again.  Or engine overheats constantly.  When the engine is hot, feel the upper radiator hose.  If it is not hot, you can bet the thermostat is stuck closed.  If it is hot, the thermostat may not be stuck close, but not opening at the proper temperature.
Stuck open is annoying, but not dangerous.  Stuck close is dangerous and can cause overheating-related damage to your engine.
If you are handy, you can replace it yourself.  Otherwise it is an easy job for a mechanic.
