Question about 1999 Subaru Impreza

1 Answer

New starter on my 2000 Subaru Impreza Outback sport is going out again. I recently bought my impreza. The check engine light came on a few times and 5 days later it would not start, I tapped on the starter by suggestion of a friend, they siad it may free up the little fan inside (then it started right up for the next week untill I got the starter replaced. The check engine light cam eon again last week and then off and then back on for about a day. Yesterday it would not start so I tried the tep methiod and it started back up. So main question, Is there somthing that is happening to the starter from another place in the car that could cause it to go out, or did I get a bad starter, am I not starting my car properly? Also some times the key wont turn even after I push the clutch. Thank you

Sounds like a bad starter. If your car is turbocharged then you might have gotten a starter meant for non-turbo application. Same thing happened to me but I couldnt get the right starter. Heat is the no.1 enemy of cars. Turbos run way hotter than non-turbo. If this is a heat related problem. I would invest in a factory starter from dealership. (worth every penny). Or just simply heat wrap it.

Spark plug gap for 2000 subaru impreza outback 2.2

2000 Subaru Impreza Outback service manual calls for 1.0 mm to 1.1 mm or .039 in. to .044 in. Most spark plugs at any auto store should be pre-gapped, but double checking never hurt. Make sure to apply a very light coat to the spark plug threads and torque them to 15 ft-lbs +/- 2 ft-lbs. Good luck.

When does a 1998 Subaru Impreza with 60,000 miles need new timing belt?

Non-California vehicles: replace every 60,000 miles

Otherwise, it is just to be inspected at 60,000 and then again at 90-95,000 miles.

check you ecu. same problem happen to me in an izuzu rodeo. I let my fuel get to low and it sucked dirt into the filter and messed with that and it set off a code for the ecu and messed it up but if i had just replaced the ecu first i wouldnt have had to change the injectors or anything.

I have a 2000 subaru impreza outback sport and I lost compression when i was doing athe timing belt. does that mean i bent the valves or is the something else it could be

May or may-not be. Recheck your timing belt. You may just be out of phase enough that the valve is not open at the right time, or closing at the right time. If you are 100% sure timing belt is in proper phase then you may have bent a valve. Good luck and have a good day.

If you have any of the large chain auto parts stores in your area, call them and ask if they do free scans; most do.
If Subaru has maintained the same procedures for a while, and you have checked fluids, etc., you can try resetting the light via the ignition switch:
-Turn on the ignition (don't start) - switch it rapidly between the 'ignition on' and 'ignition off' positions three times.
If the error has cleared itself (not uncommon), the check light will reset. If the problem is still present, it will either stay or come back on.
Our Su has done this a couple of times and with the scanner we have on hand, there was never any particular repeated problem. Just a computer glitch/hiccough -
