Turn the switch to acc then poke a paper clip in the small hole right under the switch, push it hard and hold, wiggle the switch back and forth while pulling out and it should come out really easy.

check the trans shifter cable to see if it moved out of place and or remove the dash to check behind the gages to see if the cable that goes from the steering colum to the gages has been damaged or stuck!

Remove the steering wheel center portion

if it has a driver airbag you will have to loosen the screws around the back of the steering wheel

if not the hooter potion should just clip off

once off remove the center bolt of the steering (unplug the airbag plugs if applicable)

mark where the steering wheel was located on the shaft so that you dont put it back scew.

remove the steering colum covers that go around the indicator and wiper switches.(there are usually a few scres that go in from underneath

Remove and unplug the wiper and indicator switches (usually just fastens with three very small screw from the front.

now you will see the ignition housing.

At the top side of the steering colum you will see a plate that pulles the ignition housing against the steering colum.

this plate is fastened with "break off bolts" the heads of the bolts break off once fastened as to prevent thieves loosening the ignition lock.

to loosen these screws use a centre punch and a hammer and work them in an anti clockwise direction.

Unplug the ignition switch at the back of the ignition.

please note that if the vehicle has airbags you should not switch on the ignition whilst the air bag is unplugged, this will activate the airbag fault lamp on the instrument cluster.

Install in reverse order.

On the column shift lever does not accuate transmission shift when moved.

its probably a gigantic piece of ****, just like my f350, ford used a cable style shifter and a retarted lever system in the steering colum. when i opened my colum, i found about 3 lbs of aluminum dust from what used to be the shifter lever inside the colum housing the slop in the lever caused the shift cable to travel too far and snapped it so i replaced it just to have the cable snap again. i guess im going to have to change the entire colum.

How do i remove the steering colum shroud to replace ignition on 1996 ford thunderbird

Remove the bottom shroud panel below the steering wheel and then the bottom black steering wheel cover (3 screws in the holes). You will see a 1/8 inch hole and pin below the lock set. Put the key lock in the neutral position and push the pin and remove the ignition lock set. Put the new lock set in the neutral position and insert it. Turn it to the off position which resets the lock pin.

Automatic shifting arm moves freely and wont engage gears

take off the plastic cover around the steering wheel should be about 3 or 4 screws from the bottom holding it on and see if the lever is broken where it bolts to the steering colum ive seen this happen just the other day on a 2000 jimmy which uses the same shifter assembly
