Daughter's 1996 Mazda Protege won't start. Starts with starting fluid. Fuel filter and pump replaced. Fuel to fuel rail. NOID light shows injectors getting signal. Spark at plugs, new plugs. Ideas?

Well there's a few things causing fuel problems----roll over switch(no pump function)---pressure sensor and or pressure regulator sending info to ECM(no pump function)---bypass regulator(that sends excess fuel back to tank) maybe wide open--gas just going in a circle not building up pressure---since it runs on starting fluid it's defiantly fuel supply issue

Sounds like a loose electrical/ignition connection or electric fuel pump issue.

Check spark at spark plug using a spark tester and fuel pressure at the rail when it acts up. If the pressure is ok at the rail, but the injectors aren't firing, that can point to a bad computer. If the fuel pressure is present but the spark is not being supplied to spark plug wires to spark plugs, then an ignition module might be in need of replacement (the metal plate the coil packs sit on). If the engine has a service engine soon light before it dies, maybe check the codes that should be stored in the computer using an OBD-I scanner.

Crank no start i shot it w starting fluid it started and runs fine could it be the main injection relay?

This sounds more like the fuel pump itself is bad. You may here it running but it may not be producing pressure. Find the fuel filter and take loose the fitting from the filter to the injector rail. turn on the key you should get steady pressure and longer than 3 seconds. If you have pressure and it pumps out lots of fuel real quick, the pump is good if you get a small amount of fuel and thats it, bad pump.

Starts then dies & won't restart

check fuel pressure, should be 40 psi.
try 2 things

spray starting fluid in air intake to see if it will stay running. It's fue then.

Try turning key to on nd wait 5 seconds for system to build pressure and pump to shut off. Turn key off, wait for relay clcik noise or 10 seconds. then turn key to ON again and wait 5 seconds to build pressure again. Then start engine. If it starts better, you have a bad check valve in the fuel pump or a bad pressure regulator on the fuel rail (unlikely).

well you narrowed it down to a fuel problem. not sure about your model, but most cars have a fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail to reduce un needed pressures. that could possibly be bad. its cylinder in shape and has a vacuum hose connected to it. check the hose and that unit.
