Car wants to trun over but doesn't

I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am Gt and it ran fine this morning as soon as I went to park I truned it off. When I wanted to start it up again it wouldn't/ It would just sputter like it wants to start then doesn't. I am hoping its not an expensive fix being I don't have the money right now.
Please help :D

How would I check the fuel pressure? I am new to this whole thing being its a different car that I have. Also checking for spark?

Like I said I am new to this so its hard for me to know on this car.

    Thanks

The Check Engine light was not on at all for the car. I don't have the special tools and can't get them being I can't even move my car. ummm... also, its a 3.4 L Engine.

Also, We tried to have it jump and nothing. Just had the battery checked a couple of weeks ago. Let me know if this helps. Thanks

  • Heather Schwagel May 16, 2009

When I jumped the car it was pretty much the same.. It was attempting to turn over but wouldn't... and when it got close to starting itwouldn't... went back to the same as it was. You think its a major problem?

  • Heather Schwagel May 16, 2009

Is it expensive to get it scanned? Also, do you think it would be anything else... just trying to weed out all the poblems... I have had so many problems with this car so I am hoping that I don't have to get a rid of it :(

maybe the passlock system is activated...is the security lite flashing? if so wait 15 minutes and try again..

  • Ray Keckeisen May 11, 2010

most major parts stores will scan the car for free, get the codes and get back to me

  • Ray Keckeisen May 11, 2010

it sounds like you have a battery or charging system problem, you have also probably triggerd the pass lock system in the car, you will probably need to see someone who can clear the pass-lock with a scanner for the computer. unless you can get the car scanned for codes its all just guessing. my motto is test don't guess. get back to me if you need more help. sorry

when you jump the car what happens? does it turn over or do you still have nothing, if so make sure all the cables that go to the battery are good, meaning clean and tight, get back to me Ray

You need special tools, if u don't have them to the dealer you should go.

  • Ray Keckeisen May 11, 2010

what engine is in the car, is the check engine light on?

until u get it diagnosed for what is the cause of the no start it is impossiable to guess. U will need to find out if it has fuel pressure, and if that's ok then check for spark.

I got it fixed all we did was let it sit all day and then when we went to try it again it started right up. Not for sure what the problem was but we plan on going to get it double checked just in case it was a start to something more serious. But thank you everyone trying to help me out with the problem :D

Sounds like air in fuel line. Purge fuel line. By "crank", do you mean engine spins but won't catch? Try starter fluid in intake.

2001 pontiac grand will not start all of a sudden. ran fine this

The problem may be the security issue. Do you see a security light? Dust gets into the ignition tumbler and causes a bad contact with the sensor prompting a false security issue.

I had the same problem and thought it was a fuel pump issue, but after a $500 replacement ordeal, I later encountered the same issue again.

To resolve:
Insert the key and turn on ignition tumbler to ACC on (Position prior to engaging the starter)
Wait around ~15-20 minutes (The security light will change... I believe it will flash when the security reset...it's been a long time...sorry)
Afterward, turn the ignition tumbler and off
Your card should start there after

Tumbler maintain: Blow some compress air to prevent this incident from happening.

Hopefully this will resolve your issue without the need of spending any further $$$!

1995 olds cutless is it my transmission

oil condition could be a problem
I am inclined to think that you took the car to an auto spares shop that does free fault codes reading, you will find that it is servos/ solenoids or problem TCM that is causing the problems
may even be problem wiring connectors or harness problems around the transmission
I am sure that it is not a transmission problem , just what controls the ration changes
