Question about 2000 Dodge Caravan

Speedometer not working, high revs & won't shift out of low gear

Check engine light came on, 133,000 miles, funny clunk sound

I took it to Autozone and they couldn't get a code reading to tell me that it was the "speed sensor". They said it could be transmission or emissions. Told me to go to Aamco. I hope I don't have to put a whole lot of money in it.

Your issue is a bad "speed sensor". Your speedometer is controlled by a sensor in your transmission, and when it quits working your speedometer will not work, it can cause very irregular shift patterns and slipping. Replacing your speed sensor should resolve your issues.

I hope this helps you, and I wish you luck on your repair.

I've seen the issue personally over 50 times in all different makes and types of vehicles. You can go spend hundreds of dollars at aamco, or simply replace your speed sensor.

Like I said, no reason to spend hundreds at aamco. Aamco would never have told you that it was such a simple fix, they would have taken you for every dollar they could. Glad I was able to help you.

After checking the easy stuff first like low oil level, if it is high RPM(revs) & shifts hard(lurch when it does shift) then I am thinking the transmission filter & oil need to be changed. The transmission filter acts as a suction screen on an automatic transmission & as it collects contaminants to protect the inner workings of the transmission, it becomes plugged which greatly affects the ability to shift especially the high gears at faster acceleration.

This may sound crazy to you. Check the fuse that controls the speedometer, cruise control and interior dome light. My 93 f150 battery was going dead every night. One morning I noticed the dome light inside was still on. I couldn't get it to go off so I pulled the fuse that is under the dash on the driver side. Light went out and so did speedometer. When I drove it later that day it wouldn't shift from low until I let off the gas. Then it would shift around between gears for no apparent reason. It took me a day of two to put 2 and 2 together. When I put the fuse back in, the speedometer started working and it started shifting normally. I finally took the bulb out of the dome light and now all is well.On the 93 f150 the speedometer is electronically linked to the transmission shifting points. You may have other fuses that are linked to your transmission.

check for cracked air intake tube. just fixed one on 92 accord. also look for bad vacuum lines. check tube right by throttle where it attaches to motor coming from air cleaner box. if so cut it evenly at the crack and reattach using same hose clamp. hope this helps and good luck

Just started to pull away from a stop in 1st and

sounds as though your input shaft broke, this would cause a loud clunk, cause it to feel as though in gear, and cause no pull.

Will not move from 2nd gear help PLEASE?

Your transmission is in a "limp in" mode. There are 2 sensors that need replaced. Total cost should be less than $100. I had it happen to me on my 99 300m. The sensors limit the speed to about 25 mph and the RPM rev's high. Just get the sensors replaced.
