Car is shaking & bucking, loss of power to no power, but no warning lights come on. when head lights are on they sometimes dim down then come back, manual trans, you can go a few hundred ft fine then it sputters out and comes back...and it repeats that. no smoking or smells and it has a new fuel filter
Possibly fuel flow direction(filter)is backwards?;don't take it apart just look for the fluid direction arrow on the filter first. Get a OBD Scanner read out;get them done free as advertised by some places, especially ones that do transmission/tune up companies before you touch unrelated components and make your problem worse.
SOURCE: blows lots of black smoke if back fire knocking smell of fuel in
are you losing coolant? ford had a huge problem with that engine, and the coolant eats the main bearings.
the defect is in the EGR valve setup.
check with ford, they are aware of the issue, there are thousands of them

I'm having the same problem with my 90 2.3L Ranger. I replaced the EGR Valve back in August and the truck ran fine (but the gas mileage was bad) until late December . I knew it needed an O2 Sensor back in August but didn't replace it until last Saturday along with the Idle Air Control Valve, Plugs and Wires. The truck ran fine for a couple minutes then started running like a VW bug! My code reader is now throwing out an EGR failure code, so I guess i'll take the 4 month EGR back and get a new one, and see what that does!
