Question about 1995 Subaru Legacy

2 Answers

Uh oh! I can pull the steering wheel toward me one inch!

So I got angry at this parking attendant lady and as I drove away in fury I slammed the steering wheel with my fist.  Stupid.  Very, very stupid.

I immediately could hear the steering wheel "dragging" against something as I turned corners.  I wasn't happy, so I pulled on the wheel and it popped back to where I thought it should be.

Well, as the weeks have gone by that gap has grown to be larger and larger as I find myself incidentally pushing the wheel in as I drive until it drags - then pulling it back out, and in, and out, etc.

It's now about 3/4" to an inch of play pulling in and out.  I took the airbag off thinking the nut was coming loose, but it's just fine.

What's broken?  How serious?  Is my collapsable steering collapsing?

Please don't say "take it to the dealer."  I can't afford to.

Thanks in advance!

Try looking under the hood. You may need to get a manual or research how to remove the steering to fix the problem. Sounds like a pin came loose of is worn. Also you did not mention the year.

Steering wheel is off

Oh my gawd! I once drove a motorcycle with Visegrips holding the handlebars on, but you are the king.

How do you do it with no steering wheel? Do you squeeze the splined stub to guide your vehicle?

Can't turn the key, can't move out of park.

Yes the steering wheel lock is jamming your key lock.

try to remember whihc way the wheel was turned when parking. pull down real hard in same direction and turn key.

sometimes you have the pull on wheel very hard in either direction while turning key,****DO NOT FORCE KEY only the wheel/

Removal of 2008 Prius steering wheel -

with a small flat screwdriver, remove the 2 by 2 inch black plastic covers behind the steering wheel. one of them has a hole for the cruis control lever.
loosen but dont remove the two torx screws behind these covers.
allow the airbag to fall out into your hands.
carefully raise the two yellow retainers on the airbag wires, then pull the wires away from the airbag module.
then squeeze and pull the black horn wire from the airbag.
to replace the steering wheel, unplug all the wires you see and remove the 19mm nut holding the wheel.
then by hand wiggle the steering wheel toward you.
