Question about 1997 Pontiac Firebird

Car just had a new engin put in and it is over heating after 1000 miles in about 5 miles from home the car went to 260 degrees and the check gages came on

Was your radiator ever flushed clean. Did you replace radiator hoses. New thermostat can fail so check it.

Therm. is being held open causing the engine to not heat up to a full 190 degrees. make sure you put in a 190 degree therm. and unhook the negative battery cable for at least 5 minutes to clear the code. the system could need a flush too, with over 100,000 miles or 5 years

assuming you didn't put thermostat in upside down, your system may need to be flushed. if radiator is blocked you can feel a cold spot at the blockage when the motor is warm

My car a 2000 Chevy malibu started over heating and reached 260 degrees and then car randomly shut off.... I Let it cool down put some antifreeze in it and started it back up drove it 15 miles down road...


In a way it has a fail switch, the shut down was triggered by a program in the computer. I would suspect the thermostat stuck closed, suggest you replace it.

As I remember it wasn't a recall type of situation so no notices were sent. I believe that they had simply extended the warranty terms for dash problems but if you're past the 7 year mark they may not cover it regardless of mileage. Never hurts to ask if they'll make an exception though. The servo motors that move the gauge needles were usually the problem. Hope this helps and Good luck!

I`m positive you have a bad head gasket.I just did one for a friend of mine that had the same problem on his Buick Rondevous.Same motor.These are good motors but they have a tendency to blow the head gaskets.It is usually the back one for the #1 cylinder.Hope this helps.Good luck.

are you sure the cooling fans are working?
Is the coolant temp gauge telling the truth?
have you lifted the hood and heard the coolant bubbling into the overflow?
Or heard the tinging sound of a red hot engine?
If he did a liquid test with the dye,and it changed colors it should have changed very fast,
Another thing to think about if he was to take the fan belt off,and pull the thermostat housing off,and removed the thermostat,Now pour coolant into the thermostat hole to almost the top,Now start the car and see which side the bubbles come from,left or right,that will be the gasket that is leaking not both.

2001 Alero- heat gage does not show heat tempature. Blows warm air.Engine felt cold after a 50 mile trip. Out side tempature 20 degrees fernaheight.


with winter being here you might want to consider having a new thermostat put in to increase the heat in side,but make sure your radiator is full when engine is cold

Temperature/heat wont work/dashboard lights on and off


It sounds to me like you're low on coolant. When you checked the coolant level, did you actually open the radiator cap and make sure the radiator is full? The plastic tank you generally add coolant too is actually an 'overflow' or 'reserve' tank. There is a hose that runs from that tank to the top of the radiator so if the radiator gets low on coolant, more coolant -should- run in from the overflow tank. However in practice this does not always work. I have a Jeep that leaks coolant and experiences this exact same problem. Coolant will not run from the reserve tank into the radiator because the hose is plugged up, and whenever the radiator gets low on coolant the temp gauge will go real high and then drop, and the heater doesn't work well. This is because the cooling system of your car is supposed to be a closed system, full of coolant and no air. When coolant leaks out, the space it used to occupy is now occupied by air, which does not transfer heat well. When 'air' is passing through your cooling system, no heat can be transferred from your engine to the heater and radiator, resulting in a hot engine and no heat at the heater. Then when a pocket of water passes through the system, the temperature gauge quickly falls as the water absorbs the heat from the engine. The hot water that cools the engine is where the heater gets it's heat from as well, so when water passes through the heater core, the heater works, but when it's filled with air, it doesn't.
