Yes the White wire is the reason. It goes to the Internal Regulator.
As you view the connector that plugs into your alternator, look at where the lock tab is.
Lock tab on TOP. The Black wire goes to the Left side. The White wire goes to the Right side.

The Black wire, ties into the Red wire down in the wire loom. (The Red wire goes to the starter solenoid, and this is connected straight to the battery. This is why the Red, AND the Black wire, are both Hot wires)

The White wire goes through the bulkhead wire loom, and to the bulkhead connector.

(Down under the steering shaft, and on the firewall, you'll see a rectangular Black box shape, with a Bunch of wires, coming into it from the engine compartment. The bulkhead connector is two pieces. Following it through the firewall, the other side of it is the fuse panel)

Where the White wire connects in the fuse panel,
it should go straight to the ACC fuse. (Accessory)

1990 Chevy GMC Suburban alternator wiring

Well, according to my diagrams for 88-94 models, the alternator only uses the red and brown. There are pink-black wires that power some of the sensors and solenoids but should go to a fuse marked ECM in the fuse box.
Have you tried hooking up the harness without using the pink-black wire ?

My1987 nissan pickup altrnatorwill not pull a charge, there is black wire connection that is under the boot. my black wire is just hanging there and not connected to anything but the alternator. where does...

Ground (almost always the black wire). Locate three or four connections on the alternator, depending on the type. One wired connection is black; another red; and the other can be blue, yellow, green and brown. The red and black wires are the main electrical connections. The others go to your ignition warning light system and voltage regulator.

Ensure the red wire is tightly connected to the alternator terminal. It usually is attached by a bolt. Move the wire to see whether it's loose; there shouldn't be any movement. If the wire is loose, tighten the nut using a suitably sized wrench.

Ensure the black wire is securely attached. It usually is connected to the alternator terminal using a bolt. Check whether the wire is loose; it should not move. If it does, tighten the nut using a wrench.

Hope helps.

You have 3 wires to the alternator. The black/gray wire goes to the fuse panel to the ignition. The dark green/ orange wire goes to the engine controls system. The third wire dark green goes to the powertrain control module. The red and black/gray are tied together from battery to the alternator as well the ignition switch to make a circuit. Hope this will help you.

There are usually only 3 wires to an alternator.
The heavy red power output, a light field input, and the chassis ground.

There are about 20 different types of Geo Metro alternators, so I can't be sure, but I doubt your extra wire are for the alternator. Often a wiring harness will have all the possible wires, whether they are needed or not, such as AC, etc. Look at one in a used car lot or salvage yard.

Facing the rear of the alternator, the red wire attaches to the screw terminal on the left. The black (grd) attaches to the screw terminal on the right. The top has a connector with 2 spade terminals. - one (left tab) is the "r" or relay terminal and the right one is the 'f' or field terminal.
