Question about 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

What's going on...

I was driving my 99 Jeep when the rpm gauge went crazy. It was at 1 and jumped to 4 and back down. The jeep then began to slow down I pushed the gas but didn't help. That's when my Jeep died. I was able to start it up after the 2nd try and it ran fine. Help.

1996 jeep wont stay started and oil pressure gauge goes up and down

hot or cold engine , or both.?
the oil pressure will be in direct ratio to engine rpm. slow low, fast high
due to the oil pump connection to engine crankshaft.

stalls.: can be caused by 50 things, or just 4 in physics.
the EGR valve (if you have one, no engine stated)
can stick open and stall any engine, and in fact LOVES to. clean it.
1: list 12vdc to EFI. (spark and fuel brain) dash lights dim?
2: lost compression hot, ? compression tests.
3: lost spark, do spark tests. and timing, checks.
4: bad fueling, too much if floods, and misfires and stalls.
too little fuel, it starves and dies.

the 1 free test, is can you save the stall with a fast right foot.

we do the tests. avoiding those 50 guesses....
each tests are simple and the tools dirt cheap .

Was fine started great then voltage hand went left abs light came on brake light came on dome lights came on head lights went off all panel lights went crazy blinking then jeep would not start without

Seems to be having problems with the alternator. Alternator itself can be bad, but also the voltage regulator, which sits inside the PCM (powertrain control module).
DonĀ“t continue using with battery voltage around the 10V, because it will ruin your battery as well. Completely charge the battery with an external battery charger and let the alternator be checked out first.

99 jeep grand cherokee 4.7 v8 oil pressure drops from 40 at idle to 0 when given rpms. Will come right back to 40 when you let idle again. I have removed pan and checked screen. It was clean. Original...

From what you just said, it sounds like the problem may be the dash gauge itself. I have only seen one oil pump act like that (mine) .... in that case the pump drive gear was turning on the shaft and slowing down as rpm increased but that is so rare as to be a non issue, especially when the mechanical gauge reads fine. I'd either replace the dash gauge or just install the mechanical gauge permanently on the dash. Doubt if oil in the plug will do that but you can check the plug, clean it and check the integrity of the wires going into it just to be sure.

The only thing that i can think of is for you to check the spark and wires to see if you are even sparking like you are supposed to and also i would make sure that all of the injectors are working like they are supposed to hopefully this helps

1999 jeep wrangler guages went crazy

Put a volt meter on the battery itself and take a reading when it is doing that. If charge rate is over 14v the alternator may be working but the output is not being cut down to "useful voltage" You may have a regulator problem.

Guages when crazy. Now won't even try to start.

You likely have it repaired by now but it sounds like a classic case of oxidized battery or cable connection (sometimes mis-diagnosed as bad battery but cured with new (clean) battery)
