I am assuming that it is auto, if so it could be the breather tube has come out, the dipstick goes down the side of the trans and into the trans case above the trans sump, the dipstick tube should be near the rear of the engine and the dipstick has a round ring on it to pull out with your finger
hope this helps

Hoqw do I fix the TCC release switch on a 1996 cavalier?

if its a P180 code fix it NOW there is a check ball stuck in your valve body. I ended up burning up the 2-4 band in my tranny due to same problem its a simple fix don't even have to pull tranny just drop pan upon disassembly I discovered all the clutches were good still I only burnt up the band but what is the point of just changing band if your going to take it out/apart might as well rebuild it too P180 code appeared at around 130k tranny wasted at 160k. A buddy of mine is mechanic at dealership said if u fix P180 code right away he has seen trannys (4l60e) that were maintained turn 300k before

What's your problem?1996 chevy cavalier dash warning light has a red arrow pointing towards water and car smells like something is burning P

The light does it say Water? You are sure about this? Please have this checked by a mechanic asap,. if it is starting to run hot if you catch it early then you can avoid serious damage to the engine. The smell may be a leaking engine water pump or other component of the engines cooling sytstem.

OK. This might be a dumb question but I don't know a lot about engines and transmissions as being a female and not owned my Cavalier for very long, but My 1996 2.4L sedan's transmission has packed and I...

Best thing to do,,, go to just like a catalog. You will select the year, make, and model, what part you need and then it will ask you which engine. Then it will show you what is available and the prices. You will see what kind of vehicles they came out of. There should be a lot available as usually the engines go south before the trannies do. Then you can go on Craigslist in your area and find vehicles for sale that have been wrecked or blown motors and buy the whole car.
