Question about 1996 GMC Sonoma
Do you have any check engine lights on? If you do, that is the first thing I would have checked. It does sound like plugged EGR, vacuum leak, or bad TPS

Take carburetor cleaner and with the engine running, spray your vacuum hoses and around the intake/plenum base, if at any time the engine dies down then you have a vacuum leak there. I repaired two of these with problems at the plenum. Don't recall if this engine has a fuel pressure regulator but if it does, take the vacuum hose off and if ypu smell gas in the hose then your fuel pressure regulator is part if not the whole proiblem.
