sound like one of 2 possible problems bad gas, try filling up at a different brand shell vs citco etc.clean o ring and fiiler neck after you tank up ,insure cap is on tight
with the car at an idle gently tap the mass air flow sensor with the plastic end of scew driver. if the idle changes , sputters ,etc you can try removing and cleaning with cleaner for mass air flows , if you cant find that you can try sea foam in the spray can . make sure dry re-install ,with a good o-ring at this point only you can judge wether it needed cleaned and solved the problem or needs replaced. if you tap it again and it still sputs or idle drops i would replace it , its going bad but not bad enough to register and send a code to turn on check engine
had similar problem, 2003 rio 1.6l idle fine and die when trying to accelerate or lurch and die ran fine in reverse change timing belt,wires plugs, had codes for multi cyl misfire and low injector voltage, still same lurch and die. try wiggle test on sensor plugs and main engine harness between battery and engine . i did this and found car smoothed out,tried wiggle again and car died,took harness apart where i wiggled it and found broken wire to crank sensor.good now
Smoke is never a good thing and it can be coming from an electrical connection that is not solid any more.
I would 'grope' the wiring under the dashboard to see if you find anything exhibiting heat.
If your primary fuse box is inside the car, open and inspect it to make sure there are no scorched or obviously melted fuse or fuse holders.
The rough running under the described conditions kind of points to a problem with moisture.
On a dry evening, park in a dark area, pop the hood and with the engine at an idle, look for sparks where none should be.
The common factory ignition wiring can start to leak after years of heat and cold.
The insulation value of it sinks and it may even develop visible cracks.
When it is moist, this can easily cause misfires.
Check your cold start curcit in the fuel injection. It puts extra fuel in to help it run when cold ( used to be a choke on old carbs) then when you restart it the engine has warrmed enough to run without the cold strt curcit.
If you just start is and don't move it just let it run will it clear up and not die?
The battery is only use to start the car, once the car is moving the alternator takes over and charges the battery. I sounds like the alternator is bad. You take the alternator to Napa, Auto Zone or Advance auto part and have them check it for you.
your post is 1 year old. i justed stared last week. im sure by now your problem got worse and you got tierd of waitng for help.me to i still never got any help still looking for my post .so now that ive educated myself ,on how to fix my own problem im helping others your 1 of over 5000 kia owners still waiting.
any way it was probley 1 of 2 problems your idle air valve or your mass air flow.if you still need help try reposting it. did you know our rio's are blue booked at $500.
Makes no sense. car would not die if a bolt fell out of the starter. It would die if the alternator was not charging and the battery went dead. Noise could be a belt has come off..You will have to give everything a good looking at and test a few things especially that the battery is fully charged. Any questions about what you find, I'm here!
First of all does this happen when the engine is cold? If so, check your injectors. They may be clogged. If it happens, are you able to start it back right away and it keep running? Do you or can you keep it running at a stop light/ If this is the case you may either have a clogged fuel filter and /or fuel line.
1. take the cap off (while cold!) and see if the fluid starts to move before the engine overheats, if it does not, then replace the thermostat. if it does then check the relay for the fan and/ or the fuse for the fan.
if the fan does not start up by the time it over-heats, then check the thermo-time switch with an ohm meter.
(high ohms while cold, good. low ohms while hot, good.)
