Do I loosen the pulley tensioner all the way, then replace belt?

Use a 15mm socket to loosen the tensioner,the bolt isnt supposed to come out but the tensioner turns,turn it enough to pull the belt off the alternator then there is enough slack to work with it.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Except Serpentine Belt
It may be necessary to loosen more than one pulley or remove another belt to access the drive belt, such as the power steering and air conditioning.
  1. Loosen the driven accessory's pivot and mounting bolts.
  2. Move the accessory toward or away from the engine until there is enough slack in the belt to slip it over the pulley of the driven accessory.
  3. Remove the belt from the engine.
  4. Install the new belt and move the accessory toward or away from the engine until the tension is correct. You can use a wooden hammer handle as a lever, but do not use anything metallic.
  5. Adjust the belt tension, then tighten the bolts.
Serpentine Belt
  1. Place a tool over the tensioner pulley axis bolt.
  2. Rotate the tool counterclockwise to relieve belt tension.
  3. Remove the drive belt.
  4. Carefully release the tensioner pulley and remove the tool.
To install:
  1. Route the belt over the pulleys, except tensioner.
  2. Place tool over tensioner, rotate counterclockwise and install belt.
  3. Remove the tool, then check alignment of tension and belt.

How to Replace a Power Steering Belt


This is how to replace the power steering belt in 1995 ford explorer.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the negative post on the battery. Loosen the retaining bolt with a socket and ratchet, then remove the cable end from the terminal. Isolate the cable end from the battery to prevent accidental starting of the engine while you are working.
2. Locate the serpentine belt tensioner on the front of the engine and attach a socket and ratchet to the mounting bolt in the center of the pulley. Rotate the tensioner clockwise to relieve the tension on the belt. Remove the belt from the pulleys while holding the tensioner away from the belt. Discard the old belt. Release the tensioner, slowly rotating it to the home position.
3. Install the new serpentine belt over all the pulleys except the tensioner pulley. Rotate the tensioner clockwise and slide the new belt onto the tensioner pulley. Slowly rotate the tensioner counterclockwise, allowing it to tighten the belt.
4. Remove the socket and ratchet from the tensioner pulley. Install the negative battery cable on to the negative terminal of the battery. Tighten the retaining bolt with a socket and ratchet.
5. Start the engine, verifying that the belt is mounted correctly and running true over the pulleys.

What is the easiest and fastest way to replace the tundra serpentine belt?


loosen tensioner, take belt off, install new belt except last pulley, loosen tensioner, install belt on pulley, let tensioner tighten belt. If it takes 5 minutes, your doing something wrong.

Standard Rules to Removal the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
1. Find the Tensioner(s).
2. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool, Or Wrench OR Ratchet, Rotate/Move the Tensioner USING THE AVAILABLE NUT (located on the Tensioner Pulley rotating the Tensioner Pulley/Arm - moving it away from contact with the belt and towards the area where the belt is not in contact with the Tensioner Pulley. The Tensioner is spring loaded, and is hard to rotate/move.
3. Remove the loosened belt off one of the other more easily accessed Pulleys.
4. DO NOT quickly release the Tensioner, but gently allow the Tensioner to rest in its closed position.

Standard Rules for Installing the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
a. Pick a Pulley that is most easily accessed. This will usually be on top. This will be the last Pulley that the belt will go on.
b. Using the Diagram: Install the new Serpentine Belt on the remainder of the Pulleys....over, under, left right.

How do I loosen the tension on the belt in a 1995 Chevy Caprice so I can replace the alternator?

The crankshaft turns but won't turn the serpentine belt after radiator fluid got on it!

How to change a belt on a 1995 Buick Century


A listing of serpentine belt diagrams can be found HERE. It will show you the location of the tensioner pulley, which must be loosened in order to remove and install the new belt. When the new belt is on, just readjust the tension via the tensioner pulley.

Serpentine belt too tight to install


I had the same problem when trying to replace the serpentine belt on my 2001 Trooper. The Maintenance book was very vague and I couldn't tell exactly how the tension was taken off the belt, but it did clearly identify the tensioner pulley. I first removed the pulley and looked for some kind of slot that would give me the adjustment I needed, but no slotted adjustment is present on the 01 Trooper. I had to do some research so I pulled of the tensioner assembly and found that there is a spring coil which keeps tension on the belt constant, and eliminates any belt alignment problems.

The Litens style tensioner uses a spring to apply pressure towards the serpentine belt. The way to relax the spring is to use your 14mm socket and ratchet and force the pulley down by driving the pulley nut in the clockwise direction. This forces the spring to compress and the pulley to drop giving the needed clearance to get your new belt in place.
