My service engine light has come on how do i fix it

The service engine lighe on 96 and newer Caravans (in fact all 96 and newer cars) is turned on by an on board computer (OBC II) and indicates a failure of one of a multitude of components that control the operation of the engine, transmission, cooling system, and other sub systems in your vehicle. Your car will not operate correctly until the light has been reset. A common way to determine what component has caused the light to "set" is to have your car "scanned" using a plug in device called a code reader or code scanner. Several auto parts stores, in Phoenix, Auto Zone andchecker will scan your vehicle for free ( it takes only a few minutes) and give you a printout of the failure, or failures, and suggested repair parts. The newer cars, like yours, use the OBD II and the most of the failure codes are quite specific as to what part has failed. There are very few situations that do not require repair parts to be purchased and installed in order to clear the light. In locations that require periodic emissions checks, your car will not pass if your check engine light in on. So, go to Auto Zone and start there. Hope thie helps! Dano

The Dodge P1494 engine light code means Leak Detection Pump Switch or Mechanical Fault.

A proper diagnosis must be done, you can't simply replace the LDP and expect that to fix the problem. It shouldn't hurt anything to keep driving it for a while until you can get it fixed.

There is a technical service bulletin that applies to your vehicle and it mentions that code specifically. I'm including it here for your information:

TSB-18-01-00
SUBJECT: Misdiagnosed Leak Detection Pump Systems With DTC P1494, P0442, P0455, OR P0456.
MODELS:
1997 - 2000 (LH) Concorde/Intrepid/LHS/300M/Vision and others!

DISCUSSION: During evaporative system diagnosis, Leak Detection Pumps have mistakenly been replaced. A thorough inspection for pinched, kinked, or disconnected supply vacuum lines (as currently listed in the Powertrain Diagnostic Procedures) is a critical step in diagnosing DTC P1494 (LDP SW OR MECHANICAL FAULT). Additionally, the other evaporative leak faults (DTC P0442 - SMALL LEAK, P0455 - LARGE LEAK, and P0456 - VERY SMALL LEAK) should have the supply vacuum lines examined for pinches or kinks prior to any LDP component replacement. The supply vacuum lines should be checked from the engine compartment all the way to the fuel tank, including the LDP and purge system.

NOTE: VERIFY ALL RELATED SUPPLY VACUUM LINE ROUTINGS FOR PINCHES, KINKS, OR DISCONNECTION'S BEFORE REPLACING LDP SYSTEM COMPONENTS.

Check engine light is on, and OT sensor code is P1494 was diagnosed.

P1494 - LEAK DETECTION PUMP SWITCH OR MECHANICAL FAULT . There is a service bulletin for certain years pertaining to this problem . Some cars will fill the vacuum line going to the LDP with oil , causing this dtc to trip . In most cases you can clear this and it won't come back-also, check your gas cap, it needs to seal the system, if it is loose or leaks, it can set this code.

Received code P1494 on 97' dodge caravan

P1494 is the code for the leak detection pump and or system, which is part of the early evaporative emission system. (Fuel tank fumes)
It’s there to allow the computer to run an integrity test of the fuel tank, lines and carbon canister’s ability to contain all of the fumes coming from the tank and all line associated with the system.
The code could be set for a number of reasons such as a faulty gas cap, cracked vacuum lines, solenoids & vent valves stuck to the pump itself.
It can be a very difficult fault to cure being it doesn’t take a very big leak anywhere in the system to set the code and that’s if it’s a leak and not an electrical or mechanical fault.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!
