Hate to be the bearer of bad news to me it sounds like head gasket, or cracked head, a major cause of overheat and will cause major power loss. two ways to check, take off the oil filler cap check for a white residue (thats the radiator water evaporating in hot oil) or remove the radiator cap and it may have an oily residue on the inside of the cap and the neck of the radiator, this is a sure yes, but if this not there the weeping may not yet be too bad and only a proper pressure test and they can also test for engine fumes in the radiator water, when its running, either way youll need to take it to a mech sorry. is it only sluggish when hot or all the time?? if only when hot then may only be blocked radiator or broken water pump, a car will always loose alot of power when overheating, also not a good idea to drive the vehicle in its current condition you will only cost yourself more and more money. hope i have been of some help, matt

My 2000 Dodge Durango keeps overheating, I just changed the thermostat and it continues to overheat.

You might go to a repair shop that can check to see if exhaust gasses are present in the cooling system. Unfortunately, it is possible you have a blown head gasket or cracked cylinder head. I hope I am wrong, but one of my co-workers went through the same thing with his Dakota.
Good Luck,
Richard

two probably thing , you have a pluged radiator or the fan clush is not good, if when you are cruising it doesn' t overheating , but when you stop for 2-5 minuts it does, then is the fan clush, if when cruising it overheating then is the radiator . all this thinking that you checked the cooland level and changed the termostat with the correct oness

2000 durango overheating when ac is on

Try to bleed the air from the cooling system if your antifreeze level is still normal. Sometimes air pockets withing the system get trapped near the temperature gauge and give a false reading. There should be an air bleeder valve that allows this to be done while truck is running. Also check coolant hoses for any blockages or cavitation. Hope this helps.
