It's a three peice cover that bolts to the front of the motor,it looks like the middle or bottom peice needs to come off first,it may help to remove the front passenger side tire, there are often holes covered with rubber holes on the inner fender that allow easier access to some of the components on the front of the motor.Has you husband ever done a timing belt before?

My sons 97 Escort died on the highway, had it towed home and when I turn the key it spins fast. I had my wife turn it over and watched where the timing belt is and I see a gear attached on the belt that...

videopix123, There are many reasons for a vehicle dieing at any given time. However, what you discribe here with the engine spinning fast leads me to think that the timing belt is broken. With the engine spinning fast sounds like there is no compression in the cylinders. When the timing belt breaks, a few valves will be left open and compression cannot build up and this will allow the engine to spin fast. You state that you "checked the timing belt by moving the top of cover and it seems fine and new." Do this again and have someone try to start the vehicle. If the belt does not move then it is broken and needs to be replaced. If this is not the case then, with my apologies, please feel free to resubmit your question. Good luck with this.

Car stopped running changed spark plugs wires friend came by with a tester said fuel pump out changed getting lots of gas BUT STILL WONT RUN ROLLS OVER

Well, if it has spark, and fuel, then it is missing compression. Check the timing belt, it is probably broken.

The Ford maintenance info for 97 Escort can be found at the below site, where you can download your original owners manual and maintenance schedule for free. It states to replace the camshaft drive belt every 60k.

G'day mate 1st question is have you changed the belt or just found it that way? if you did change the belt you might find that one of the cogs looks like it has a spilt along it well this is a spring loaded part that takes the slack out wind it oposite to roation1 tooth and refit belt should sort it out , not as easy as it sounds but see how you go

IS CHANGING THE SERPENTINE BELT SCHEDULED MAINTAINENCE FOR MY 97 ESCORT? IF SO WHAT ELSE HAS TO BE REPLACED AT THAT TIME?

replacing this belt is just insurance that it won't break on you later, depending on how many miles you had driven it so far...it's advise to change the TENSIONER also, this keeps the belt correctly adjusted, check also the IDLER pulleys for bearing type noise and repl as needed...........The other BELT you should maintain is the TIMING BELT for the engine, service it around every 60K and also when doing that repl the waterpump and nec. pulleys.....These Escorts are generally low maint vehicle, and affordable to run....hope this helps you...GL
