Question about 2003 Saturn ION

2003 Saturn L300 Air Conditioner Does Not Blow Cold Air

HVAC system is 'automatic climate control' type. Set the temp and the car does the rest. Here's what I know:

Heat Works Fine
System has been tested, no freon leaks.
Problem: A/C does not kick on regardless of temp setting.
the unit blows warm air. This was sporadic at first, no cold air at all now.
Took car to saturn dealer, they claim they cannot determine if the problem is with Body Control Module or HVAC control head. I have a 50/50 chance, replace one, if that does not work, replace the other. Cost $500 each. (no refund if the first fix does not work).
They tested the BCM and claimed it was having trouble communicating with the HVAC control head, but they couldn't guarantee that is the problem.

Any thoughts? I don't mind paying for repairs, this seems a little out of line.

Thanks

A/C rarely works, not in a month now. Independent garage says BCM by their diagnostic equip. Saturn plays dumb. Also, rear defog no workie, seat belt dinger won't shut off sometimes, but the real problem with this car is that it has cupped the rear tires since the day it rolled off the lot. Saturn plays dumb. When this dealership opened it was different, especially the service dept. After about 3 yrs they were just like any other gm service dept. They love their job, except for all the cars and customers.

I worked at saturn dealer for 18yrs.Those auto hvac heads are a weak link on the L-Series.But I have to say the BCM's are totally junk!! But if it was me I would go with the BCM because you can get a used HVAC head from junk yard but the BCM has to be new because it has to be flashed. If It was me I would try to get a used hvac control from salvage yard. Also yo might want to get a 2nd opinion because those L-Series cars are all bad for Compressor concerns.Hope this helps

Why is my AC compressor running when my temperature control is set to heat, fan control set to 2, AC control switch off and air flow control set for floor?

If you have an automatic climate system where you can set temp the the compressor will run at some of the middle settings. The system blends cold and warm air to obtain the desired temp setting. If it does not have automatic control you have another issue.

With A/C on; Hot air (only) on drivers side / Cold air on passengers side

Unplugging battery cables does not fix anything. There are many "wannabe mechanics" that will tell you to do this. All this accomplishes is a complete memory loss in your computer network including learned idle control, fuel control, and transmission shift control values. This type of "diagnosis" or "resetting" can actually cause damage to your vehicle under certain conditions. I highly recommend not doing it.

It would also be really nice if you were to mention the YEAR, MAKE, MODEL, ENGINE SIZE, and since you are wanting HVAC information, AUTOMATIC climate control, or MANUAL climate control?

With all that said, I think it safe to assume that you have at least dual zone control on your system. Blend air door actuator failures and broken blend air doors are common on several types of vehicles. In these cases, any kind of "reset" would be worthless anyway.

I highly recommend proper diagnosis and repair.

I have a 2003 saturn ion and my blower for a/c and heater stopped working where is the fuse located?

Hi, if you have automatic climate controls (where you can select a certain temperature), the whole system is run off the 40 amp HVAC fuse in the box under the hood.
If you have manual controls (where there is just a knob that you turn from cold to hot), the blower is run off the 30 amp RUN fuse.
In the case of manual control systems, the problem can be caused by many different parts. Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6234839-doesn_t_heater_or_air_conditioner_blow . These are genericinstructions. I have pasted the specific wiring diagrams for your car below.

Bob,if this is an automatic(climate control)type system,it could be a computer problem or electronic board problem.

1.)If your System is OVERCHARGED this Will Occure due to the EVAPERATOR FREEZING UP
2.) Also if your HVAC Control Modual is Malfunctioning this will Aslo Cause this Condition, It Controls the BLEND DOORS that OPEN for COLD or HOT AIR Look Into these Items and Also Look Into wethrt the A/C Compressor Cycles OFF when it GETS OFF this Will POINT at the HVAC CONTROLER if it Cycles Off When Set For A/C or COLD Air

WHen we use the auto car starter, it blows cold air, and a lot of it. Its nearing the winter here in New England and I need to know how to set up the starter to blow warm air. Any ideas?

Start the vehcle and let it warm up then set all the controls to heater? Then turn off the car. Use the remote start to start the vehicle and check the controls are still set to heat mode.
