Question about 1997 Volkswagen Jetta

2 Answers

I have a 2002 VW POLO 1.2 The engine management light came on and the car started to ?shake? on start up until some revs were applied and then returned to normal. Took it in to the garage and they said that one of my cyclinders was misfiring and glowing white?..so they replaced the head gasket and fixed the cylinder, which stopped the shaking A few days later I am plodding along the motorway and the light on comes again?so I took it back, and they replaced the temperature sensor. Two days later the light comes on again and when I am idle the car is making a rattling noise, so I now I have to take it back again. I do not anything about cars but it appears after not having a car for 2 weeks and £900.00 down the light is still on and the problem seems worse. Does anyone have any ideas?

I also have a 2002 VW Polo 1.2, which I bought in January this year. The first time i drove it the engine management light came on. I took it to a garage and they changed a sensor in the exhaust system at a cost of £350. I drove the car again the following week and the light came on again, I took it to the same garage and they told me it was unrelated and that i needed another £300 repair. Refusing this I took the car to my parents mechanic who told me that these lights are prone to coming at the slightest little thing and to ignore it if the car is driving fine and sounds normal. He said that if there was a genuine problem that you wouldn't need the light to tell you but that the problem would be obvious through the sound it made or by the way the car started to drive. He said he felt the sensors were over sensitive and were there largely to encourage owners to take their cars into the garage for expensive repairs which didn't need doing.
He told me to drive the car as normal and ignore the light. He said only take it to a garage if there is an obvious problem, otherwise I was wasting my time and money.
I now drive the car without worrying abou the light and so far I haven't had any problems.
Suggest you do the same.

02 VW Jetta TDI with ALH engine glow plug

this is a common problem for these cars glow plugs go bad like spark plugs however the smoke would lead to bad mass airflow meter. it is not telling ecu corrcet miss. disconnect mass airflow meter. when cold see if this makes it start better. it should would means you need new m.a.f. glow plug issue take a test light place clamp on positive of battery then pull off glow plug connectors place tip of test light on glow plug the bad one will have a dull light unlike the good one which will be brighter. will need new plugs and wire harness four **** connectors and wire striper and crimper will fix concern good luck

Engine revs on its own! vw polo

There are many number of reasons for this problem...but a VERY common one is a faulty thermo sensor which controls air / fuel ratio.

Engine shakes and hesitate when started until it idles down

Sounds like its missing on 1 or more cylinders. A check of the plugs and wires is in order, Could be a fouled plug or a loose/bad sparkplug wire. Best of luck.
